Arthroscopic Knee Surgery to Repair ACL Injuries or Meniscus Tears Won’t Stop Osteoarthritis from Developing In the Knee
A study published in the journal of Radiology (August 2010 issue) followed 326 men and women 10 years after they had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair torn Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (ACL) and meniscus tears. Initially, researchers hypothesized that patients who had arthroscopic knee surgery would lower their risk for developing osteoarthritis in their knee and also lower their risk for other complications such as loss of cartilage, lesions in the bone marrow, and narrowing of the joint space. However, this was not the case, osteoarthritis developed in the men and women’s knees’ despite doing knee surgery to fix the injuries.
This research study confirms what I view on x-rays on daily basis which is surgery does NOT stop osteoarthritis it actually helps contribute and speeds up the process of cartilage loss and deterioration!
The bottom line is knee surgery will not prevent osteoarthritis in the knee, so don’t be fooled into thinking that it will…

Severe Arthritis Knee Pain in Both Knees is Finally Relieved with Dr. Schnees’ Cold Laser Knee Program
My knees felt awful. I had knee pain in both knees when I walked and when I stood for any length of time. I used a cane to get around. I tried knee shots but they didn’t work.
Since completing cold laser treatments with Dr. Schnee I can now stand without having knee pain, and I don’t use a cane to get around! I am at least 50% better then I was before starting care with Dr. Schnee.

What is the Most Effective, Non-Invasive Treatment Option Available for Knee Pain Relief?
After reviewing the pros and cons of cold laser therapy and comparing them to the most commonly prescribed non-invasive treatment options available for knee pain relief I am sure you will conclude that cold laser therapy is the most effective non-invasive treatment option available.
Let’s begin by discussing the various non-surgical options to treat knee pain:
Cortizone Injections or Steroid Injections :
Besides anti-inflammatories, cortizone injections are one of the most commonly prescribed treatments for knee pain. Unfortunately, the effects of a cortisone injection are temporary in nature and often times a patient will further injure their knee because the injection masks the pain but does not fix the problem. Once the cortisone injection wears-off the pain comes back, and sometimes worse than it was prior to getting the injection. In addition, a doctor will only prescribe three cortisone injections a year because the injections are known to deteriorate bone. Beware of getting cortisone injections if you are a diabetic it may cause havoc on your sugar levels.
Conclusion: Painful, Short-term and long term side-effects, not safe for long term use, Temporary Relief, Treats symptoms, Diabetics and patients with brittle bones beware.
Synvisc™, Orthovisc™, Hyalgen™, Euflexxa™, AKA: knee gel injections, AKA: Rooster comb injections for the knee:
Rooster comb injections are given in a series of 3 or 5 injections over the course of several weeks, and the series can be repeated every 6 months. If you ask just about any knee pain sufferer that has had these painful injections most will tell you that the injections did NOTHING to help relieve their knee pain. Unfortunately, if you do notice any knee pain relief it will typically last only 6 months. Most patients who choose to undergo the series of injections every 6 months over the course of a few years may eventually experience an allergic reaction. There have been no long-term studies completed so long-term side-effects are unknown.
Conclusion: Painful, Short-term and long-term side-effects, unclear how safe it is for long term use, Temporary Relief, Treats symptoms, Series of injections
Anti-Inflammatory
The results from anti-inflammatories are temporary in nature and patients need to continue taking them on a daily basis in order to feel any results. In addition, over the long run NSAIDS can cause ulcers and ibuprofen can cause liver problems.
Conclusion: Not painful, Short-term and long term side-effects, not safe for long term use, Temporary relief-needs continuous use to be effective
Cold Laser Therapy (Class IIIB lasers)
Cold Laser Therapy has been around for over 35 years in Europe and Asia, and 15 years in the United States. There are over 2,500 published studies on the topic of cold laser therapy and (many of them are double blind, placebo controlled studies). The treatment is FDA cleared, safe, painless, and there are no side-effects with treatments. Unfortunately, cold laser therapy is not a quick fix especially when treating chronic knee pain. Even though patients may notice improvement after just a few treatments most patients undergo a series of treatments over a 5-10 week period depending on the severity of their knee problem. Once the treatments are completed most patients will notice that the results are not temporary in nature. It is not uncommon that as a result of cold laser treatments symptoms such as knee pain, swelling, immobility may be completely eliminated or substantially reduced. Patients suffering with severe and chronic knee pain may need periodic maintenance treatments. Also make sure you choose a doctor that specializes in using cold lasers to treat knee pain otherwise you make not get the results you deserve.
Conclusion: Safe, painless, no side-effects, typically knee pain relief is NOT temporary in nature, takes a series of treatments and then possible periodic follow ups are needed, to get the best results pick a doctor that treats only knees and specializes in cold laser therapy.
Cold Laser Therapy is the optimal choice for treating severe knee pain non-invasively.

Four Years Ago, Two Orthopedic Doctors Recommended Total Knee Replacement Surgery…
Before starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I could not walk properly. Four years ago two orthopedic doctors recommended knee replacement surgery. I did not do it!
Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can jump out of bed with no fear of my legs (knees) giving way. Moreover, I can walk with less pain, and I have more mobility. I can walk up stairways without having to climb up one step at a time and without having to stop to rest midway. Now, I’m walking more naturally, I have less pain, stiffness in my knees, and less swelling.
In general I have 70% overall improvement in my knees.

What Options Are Available When You’ve Already Tried Everything To Get Rid Of Your Knee Pain?
What are your options when you’ve been suffering with severe knee pain for years, and you’ve already tried everything to get rid of the pain for instance injections (cortisone and/ or gel injections), prescription/ over the counter medications, and/or have had arthroscopic knee surgery and your knee is not any better?
The following is a list of options:
Do any of these sound familiar to you?
A) Live with the pain. (Obviously, this is not something you want to hear when you’re dealing with pain.)
B) Get a partial or total knee replacement. (Definitely NOT a good option, and should always be the final step after all conservative measures have been exhausted.)
C) Try more of the same things that didn’t get your knee better the first time around. (for example: medications, surgery and injections.) (Not a smart option)
In my opinion this shouldn’t even be an option. I have never understood why someone would allow an orthopedic surgeon to perform arthroscopic knee surgery for a second time or undergo another round of knee injections if they weren’t successful the first time around.
D) Exercise.
Exercising the muscles around the knee joint is a crucial part of recovery. However, it is only one step in the recovery process, and normally it is the last step. Even though patients are often told to exercise it is usually impossible for someone suffering with severe knee pain. If you are experiencing pain while exercising STOP BECAUSE YOU COULD BE CREATING MORE DAMAGE TO THE KNEE JOINT.
E) Cold Laser Therapy.
This is the final and in my opinion the best option for patients suffering from knee pain.
Cold lasers are safe and effective. There is over 40 years of research proving its effectiveness in treating joint, and soft tissue ailments. Cold lasers are used to help reduce/eliminate knee pain and inflammation, repair and heal damaged tissues in and around the knee joint, and speed up the healing process. Cold lasers allow you to get back to living your life pain-free again without the need for medications, injections or surgery.
If you’ve already exhausted all of your options and don’t want a knee replacement then call our office. You’ll be glad you did. The only thing you’ll regret is not calling us sooner.

Do Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Arthritis Knee Pain Really Work?
No! Not according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Researchers found that hyaluronic acid injections (rooster comb injections) given in the knee joint (for instance Hyalgan, Synvisc, Artzal, Suplasyn, BioHy, or Orthovisc) at best, had a small effect in the treatment of knee OA (osteoarthritis) compared with a placebo injection … Approximately 80% of the treatment effect of intra-articular hyaluronic acid was accounted for by the placebo effect of an intra-articular injection.
The study concluded that there was no real evidence to show that hyaluronic acid injections are more effective than placebo injections.
Even though the US Food and Drug Administration approved hyaluronic acid injections for the treatment of arthritis knee pain its effect is still controversial. Unfortunately, the reason that hyaluronic acid injections are controversial is that most of the research studies published about the injections have been funded by the developers of the drug and therefore are considered bias.
The study mentioned above was performed by a third party, and to our knowledge was not funded by a drug company.

Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program Helped (Yet Another) Patient Avoid a Total Knee Replacement
Knee Pain Was So Severe That Patient Could Not Put Weight On Her Knee, Had To Walk With A Limp, And Could Not Stand For Any Length Of Time
Prior to starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program my knee pain was so bad I could only walk with a limp. I could not stand up or stand for any length of time. I was told I needed a knee replacement! I tried shots, medications, physical therapy but (those things did not help me).
Now I am able to stand for longer periods of time and I am able to put weight on my leg when walking. My knee is 50-60% better then it was before starting treatments. I am very happy and I feel the treatment helped me very much.
Thanks to all you guys for all your help.

Cold Laser Therapy Improves Pain, Function And Quality Of Life for Patients Suffering From Osteoarthritis Knee Pain!
A double-blind, randomized, controlled trial was conducted in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) to evaluate the efficacy of low level laser therapy as well as to compare two different laser therapy regimes.
Ninety patients were randomly assigned to three treatment groups by one of the non treating authors by drawing 1 of 90 envelopes. Each of the three groups consisted of 30 patients. Group A received cold laser therapy and exercise. Group B received a few more minutes of cold laser therapy at a different dose along with exercise. Group C received placebo laser treatments and exercise.
Subjects, physician, and data analysts were unaware of the code for active or placebo laser until the data analysis was complete. All patients were evaluated with respect to pain, degree of active knee flexion, duration of morning stiffness, painless walking distance and duration, and the Western Ontario and Mc Master Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) at week 0, 6, 10, and 14.
The study found that there were statistically significant improvements indicated with respect to all parameters such as pain, function, and quality of life measures in the post-therapy period compared to pre-therapy in both groups that received active cold laser treatments. Improvements in all parameters of Group I, and in parameters, such as pain and WOMAC of Group II, were more statistically significant when compared with the placebo laser group.

A Comparative Study of Arthroscopy vs. Conservative Treatment for Arthritis Knee Pain.
The lengthening of the average life span has led to an increase in degenerative diseases, among them osteoarthritis. Arthroscopy, which has been used extensively to decrease pain and inflammation and increase the range of motion, has recently been challenged as the treatment of choice… Since there is limited benefit to be gained from arthroscopy in cases where there is no mechanical damage to the knee, we suggest that nonsurgical, conservative methods be employed in treating the majority of cases of osteoarthritis.

Start Eating Cherries, It May Help Ease Osteoarthritis Knee Pain
The Baylor Research Institute conducted a 12 week pilot study on a total of 20 patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee. The study involved patients taking the equivalent of 100 tart cherries crushed in a pill form daily. The study found that after 12 weeks between 50 and 60 percent of patients experienced relief by taking just one pill a day. A randomized trial will be completed in 2010 to validate the pilot study. If the results of this study show that the patients who took cherry pills improved then this will give patients another natural option for managing osteoarthritis knee pain. (1)
