Fort Worth Resident Experiences Knee Pain Relief with Non-Surgical Cold Laser Therapy

By Dr Schnee · December 1, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Testimonial · No Comments »

Two months ago, Mrs. D visited Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C. at the DFW Spine & Joint Center complaining of severe knee pain.  The pain kept her from doing any activities that involved walking, standing, or climbing stairs.  She even complained of pain at night.  She was told by an orthopedic surgeon that she would need to get a total knee replacement since she was diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’, osteoarthritis of the knee, and chondromalacia patella.  Mrs. D did not want to have knee surgery because she had friends who had it done and they were still complaining that they had knee pain.  The following testimonial is Mrs. D’s story and her experience with Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Treatment Knee Program. (She gave us permission to share it.)

“[Before starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program] the pain in my left knee was very severe.  There was swelling and a popping noise when I walked.  My walking was slow and painful.   When my knee pain was at its worst the walking and standing was limited to short periods of time.  Sitting and lying down was very uncomfortable to get in the right position.  Before cold laser therapy I tried using a heating pad and I took Aleve two and three times a day and I stayed off of my feet as much as possible.   I talked with my friends that were having the same problems and they had the replacement and surgery and I didn’t want to go that way so I decided I did not want surgery. [Even though the surgeon recommended that I have knee replacement surgery].

Since completing Dr.Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can sleep at night.   I don’t use a pillow anymore [between my knee knees] and I can stand and walk without knee pain.  There is very little popping, and the swelling [in my knee] is completely gone.

I am very pleased with cold laser therapy treatments.  [This is non-surgical so] There are no scars.  My overall percentage [of improvement since starting care] would be 85-95%.  I have told all of my friends and I recommend it very highly.”

Cold Laser Knee Program Helps Dallas Resident Walk and Sleep through the Night Pain-Free!

By Dr Schnee · November 30, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Testimonial · No Comments »

Dallas resident and full-time property manager Mrs. B could hardly walk without the use of a cane when she initially came in to see Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C.

She was diagnosed with a Baker’s Cyst, osteoarthritis of the knee and ‘bone on bone’ by her orthopedic doctor. Since Mrs. B is the sole caretaker for her handicapped husband she chose to delay knee replacement surgery, and instead undergo Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.

The following testimonial was written by Mrs. B after she completed treatments at the DFW Spine & Joint Center.

“At times [the pain in my right knee] was extreme to the point I couldn’t walk.  The knee would buckle and the pain was constant.  I couldn’t walk, perform my household work, or perform my job [duties]).    I tried shots in the knee, [wearing] a knee brace, over the counter medications, and heat on the affected area.  The orthopedic surgeon said a knee replacement was quite possible if the Euflexxa shots did not give relief.

Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can do everyday chores and care for my handicapped husband as well as take care of my work obligations-I have no pain in my right knee so I can sleep at night.  The knee pain and swelling is significantly reduced and with ice and Biofreeze I am able to do most everything I need to do.”

Dallas Resident’s ‘Bone on Bone’ Knee Pain is No Longer Keeping Her Up at Night After Completing Cold Laser Knee Program

By Dr Schnee · November 24, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Testimonial · No Comments »

“My knee pain was intense I will say it was about a 10 [on a pain scale of 0-10].  My knee was almost ‘bone on bone’, and I was told that I needed a total knee replacement.   I couldn’t stand for a long time and I had to use a crutch to keep from falling.  I also used to wake up in pain in the middle of the night [from knee pain].

Since starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can walk without a crutch, stand for a short while, and sleep thru the night without [experiencing] knee pain.  I am pleased with the results.  I now hardly have any pain in my knee.  [And] I have little popping going on with my knee.”

Knee Replacement for Amarillo Resident is No Longer an Option Since ‘Bone on Bone’ Knee Pain is Almost Gone

By Dr Schnee · November 18, 2010 · Filed in Knee Surgery, Testimonial · No Comments »

Martha C. drove to the DFW Spine & Joint Center in Irving, Texas from Amarillo every week to undergo Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.  This is her story…

“I had constant throbbing pain in my right knee causing me to give in to it and I was putting constant pressure on my left knee and hip.  I also had knee pain at night that would wake me and cause loss of sleep.  I had to move around to find a comfortable place that would ease the pain in my knee.  I couldn’t walk for any length of time or distance.  Climbing up and down stairs was very painful.  Standing in line for a short time would bring on pain.  I was told by the orthopedic surgeon that I was ‘bone on bone’ and I needed knee surgery if the pain became too intense to bear.  I tried taking medications, injections, six weeks of therapy and exercise but none of those things helped.

I am very pleased with my results with Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.  The knee treatments have stopped the constant pain in my knee and it has been wonderful.  I am happy with my experience with the cold laser treatments and the therapists.  Dr. Schnee explained everything in terms that anyone could understand.  My percentage of overall improvement is 90%!”

Incorrect Placement Of Needle: One More Reason Why Knee Injections Aren’t Effective On Patients With Osteoarthritis Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · November 15, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain · No Comments »

Research presented at the 2010 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Rheumatology/Association of Rheumatology Health Professionals found most doctors performing knee injections on patients with osteoarthritis of the knee were not placing the needle in the correct location in order for the knee injection to be effective.  Interestingly, when interviewed, these doctors who are specialists in performing knee injections were 95% certain that they were placing the needle in the correct location of the knee joint. 1

The point of the research was to support the use of the ultrasound- guided method of giving knee injections rather than the standard palpation technique that is most commonly used in doctors’ offices-AND FAILS!

Besides inaccurate placement of the needle leading to poor outcomes for patients choosing to have knee injections; here are a few interesting facts you should know about knee injections. (for example, hyaluronic acid injections: aka rooster comb injections: aka gel injections, SYNVISC®, Euflexxa®, Orthovisc®, Hyalgan®, Suppartz®)

  • In multiple studies, researchers found that knee injections are as effective as placebo injections2,3,4, and that 80% of their effectiveness was due to the placebo effect.5
  • Anti-inflammatory drugs are 48 times more effective then knee injections.6
  • If pain-relief was experienced it occurred after the draining of the fluid in the knee; a step taken prior to the actual knee injection being performed.

If you live in the Dallas/ Fort Worth or surrounding areas and you’ve had knee injections but are still suffering from knee pain due to arthritis  then you may benefit from Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program. Call the DFW Spine & Joint Center today at 214-596-1051.

Learn How Osteoarthritis Affects the Knee Joint and How to Ultimately Avoid Knee Surgery

By Dr Schnee · October 19, 2010 · Filed in Knee Surgery, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

Osteoarthritis is a complex disease that takes years to develop and is often described as a ‘wear and tear’ disease most commonly diagnosed in weight bearing joints such as the knee joint. Often times when the disease is in its beginning stages people will complain of morning pain and stiffness and as the disease progresses it often leads to severe pain, disability, and instability of the joint.

How Does Osteoarthritis Affect the Knee Joint?

First, the articular cartilage or protective layer of the joint begins to lose water. Why? Usually cartilage loses water due to age, genetics, weight, and activity level.  For example, runners place an excessive amount of stress on their knee joints and eventually they develop osteoarthritis knee pain. The constant pounding on the knees takes a toll on the joints.  X-rays taken on long time runners will demonstrate degenerative changes and cartilage loss in the knee joints.

Once the cartilage starts to dry up and lose water content then the cartilage begins to break down and become brittle and fragmented.  Imagine a sponge.  If a sponge is dry it can crack and be torn very easily. However, if a sponge is full of water, then it’s very difficult to tear.  This is the reason why cartilage or meniscus tears are prevalent in people over 50 years of age.  The older a person is the less water content is in their cartilage, and the drier and more fragmented it becomes.

Once the cartilage loses its cohesive ability the lining of the joint or the synovium becomes irritated and inflamed, producing its own source of pain and swelling.  As a result the inflamed lining or membrane produces more enzymes which further degrade the cartilage and accelerate the arthritic process in the knee joint.  The continued fragmentation and breaking down of cartilage eventually exposes the underlying bone.

What is making your knees hurt?

I know it seems hard to believe but the loss of cartilage is NOT the cause of your knee pain. There are NO nerve endings in cartilage therefore knee pain does not come from the lack of cartilage in the knee joint.  Instead the pain originates from the synovium which gets irritated and inflamed as a result of the cartilage breaking down.  As the cartilage starts to become more fragmented,  the underlying bone, which is full of nerve endings, becomes exposed.   Only once the nerve endings become irritated will a person experience pain in the bone itself and the actual bone will become tender to the touch.

Steps you can take to get relief from osteoarthritis knee pain:

The good news is that there are steps you can take to help avoid or at least delay knee surgery.

For instance, consider taking a combination of a high quality supplement of glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin to help preserve the cartilage in your knee, and help lubricate the joints. In addition, taking Vitamin D3 helps keep your bones strong, and omega- 3 fish oil acts as an anti-inflammatory which ultimately helps maintain the health of your knee joint.  Finally, find a doctor in your area that specializes in treating knee pain using cold laser therapy. Cold laser therapy is used to increase the metabolic rate of the damaged cells in the tissue which in turn initiates certain physiological functions in the cell so that the tissue can heal and repair faster.  As a result of this reaction, the swelling, inflammation, and nerve irritation in the knee joint are reduced thereby eliminating pain.  In my office in Irving, Texas we combine cold laser therapy, exercises, and various form of physiotherapy into one Cold Laser Knee Program. This is important because not only do I want to help eliminate a person’s knee pain and reduce the inflammation/swelling in the knee, but I also want to strengthen the surrounding muscles of the knee to help take the load off of the joint.  In my office it is not uncommon for patients who have been diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’ to complete treatments with the swelling eliminated and their knee pain reduced by 50-90%.

Dallas Cold Laser Doctors’ Knee Program Helps Fort Worth ‘Bone on Bone’ Knee Pain Sufferer Without Knee Surgery

By Dr Schnee · October 5, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Testimonial · No Comments »

“Before starting treatments with Dr. Alexandra Schnee at the DFW Spine & Joint Center my knees hurt all the time and I felt pain with every step.  Climbing stairs was almost impossible and even leisure activities were a real challenge to perform.  I was on so many medications that it affected my kidney function so I had to stop taking them.  I also had arthroscopic knee surgery on my left knee and I was told by the orthopedic surgeon that I needed total knee replacements on both knees.

I did not want knee surgery and I couldn’t live with the pain I was constantly in so I decided to try Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.  I am so pleased with my improvement! I can walk a lot easier now and I no longer need to use my cane to get around.  My knees feel at least 50% better than before completing this program and the little pain I do feel is bearable.”

High Heels May Result in Osteoarthritis Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · September 28, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

Kinesiology researchers from Iowa State University found that wearing high heels can contribute to joint degeneration and osteoarthritis of the knee.  Danielle Barkema a graduate student and Phil Martin a kinesiology professor tested three heel heights on 15 women.  They used flat shoes, 2 inch heels and 3.5 inch heels and conducted walking trials with each of the 15 women.  They used accelerometers and lab equipment to measure the forces acting on the knee joint when walking in heels.  The researchers found that increased heel height resulted in slower speeds and shorter stride lengths when walking.  In addition as the heels got higher the more strain was placed on the inner aspect of the joint; which over time could lead to degeneration of the cartilage and osteoarthritis of the knee.

The research suggests that wearing high heels increases the risk for the development of osteoarthritis of the knee.

However, researchers caution that more studies need to be conducted on a larger sample of women to definitively state whether wearing high heels leads to osteoarthritis of the knees.

In my experience, men (wearing cowboy boots) and women who already suffer from osteoarthritis of the knee have difficulty wearing heels because of the stress it places on the inner aspect of the knee joint.  In addition, patients with knee pain from meniscus tears will find that high heels exacerbate the pain. Typically, once they complete my Cold Laser Knee Program they are able to wear heels again without experiencing knee pain (even though I never recommend that a patient wears heels).

Muscle Pain Causing Your Knee Pain? Try Eating Ginger

By Dr Schnee · September 25, 2010 · Filed in Exercise, Health, Knee Pain · No Comments »

If you’ve never eaten raw ginger you may want to start.  A new study reported in The Journal of Pain, published by the American Pain Society states that taking daily doses of heat-treated or raw ginger helps relieve muscle pain by nearly 25%.  Past research has shown that ginger may have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving or analgesic properties similar to NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories).  So researchers from the University of Georgia and Georgia College and State University examined the effectiveness of ginger on 74 volunteers.  These volunteers were divided into three groups and were either given raw ginger, heated ginger, or placebo.  The volunteers were given ginger for 11 consecutive days after they completed 18 eccentric muscle exercises that induced muscle pain.

The results of the study indicated that the raw ginger lowered the muscle pain intensity by 25% and the heat treated ginger lowered it by 23%. The report did not indicate the amount of ginger given to the volunteers during this study.

If you are suffering from knee pain and you want to avoid knee surgery then Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program may be able to help you.  Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program combines cold laser therapy and physiotherapy to help eliminate knee pain and strengthen the muscles supporting the knee joint.
