Knee Doctor in Dallas Sheds Light on Cold Laser Therapy for Knee Pain

Cold laser therapy for knee pain relief has been an effective non-surgical treatment option for individuals in the Dallas Fort Worth area since 2001. Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program™ is a program that integrates both physical medicine along with cold laser therapy; so that individuals complaining of knee pain can receive relief and avoid having unnecessary knee surgery.

There are three major outcomes when receiving Cold Laser Therapy for knee pain:

1) Healing- Cold laser therapy accelerates the healing process by stimulating ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) or energy production in the cell thereby allowing tissues to heal and repair faster.

2) Knee Pain Relief: Normalizes the sodium potassium gradient in the nerve cell thereby eliminating or relieving knee pain.

3) Reduction/Elimination of Swelling/Inflammation in the Knees: Allows the cells to get rid of excess fluid thereby allowing the pressure around the knee joint to be relieved.

Overview of Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program™:

Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program™ is unique in that it combines specialized cold laser knee protocols, multiple lasers, and other physiotherapy treatments to relieve pain, inflammation, and strengthen the muscles around the knee joint.  Each treatment program is customized for the individual.

Moreover, Dr. Schnee utilizes multiple lasers in her treatment programs since an individuals’ knee may be diagnosed with several different conditions that need to be addressed simultaneously.

How Many Treatments Are Necessary?

The total number of treatments varies depending on the knee condition being treated.  It may take 10-30 treatments to receive optimal results.  However, most individuals may notice improvements around the 6-12 treatment.

How Long Does A Treatment Take?

Each treatment takes 20 minutes to an hour depending on the condition being treated.

Is the Treatment Uncomfortable or Painful?

Cold laser treatments are painless, and there are no documented side-effects associated with the therapy.  (It’s rare, but you may be sore after the first treatment, but that sensation goes away after the first day or two.)

What Might I Expect After Completing Treatments?

Over the past 35 years, there have been thousands of papers written and hundreds of double blind placebo controlled studies that have been performed that have proven the effectiveness of cold laser therapy.

In 2011, Dr. Schnee and her colleague Dr. Robert Hanson, D.C. presented their clinical findings in the form of an abstract at the annual North American Association for Laser Therapy conference in Milwaukee.  They found that 79.8% of individuals diagnosed with moderate to severe osteoarthritis in the knee stated that their knee felt ‘moderately better to a great deal better’ after completing cold laser therapy treatments at the DFW Spine & Joint Center in Irving, Texas.

Patient’s Stories….

The following individuals have actually completed Dr. Schnee’s cold laser therapy for knee pain program with Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C. at the DFW Spine & Joint Center in Irving, Texas.  The stories you are about to read either came from  individuals who did not want to undergo knee replacement surgery, or were not candidates for knee surgery (due to other health problems).  Prior to starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program™ they all complained of knee pain when walking, standing, or sleeping.

Here are their stories:

“If Someone Had Not Referred Me To Dr. Schnee I Would Have Scheduled Surgery Replacement For My Knees…”

My knee pain was unbearable at times. I could not do much of anything like clean the house, stand, or walk. I used to get steroid shots every 4-6 weeks (which would only last 4-5 days) I had to take pain medication every day just so I could tolerate the pain in my knee.  The pain medication was non-narcotic so I could function during the day.  I also tried the SYNVISC injections every 6 months (they did not help at all).  I was told to get both knees replaced.

I am so grateful to Dr. Schnee.  If someone had not referred me to her I would have scheduled surgery for replacement for my knees.  I now have the quality of life I have not had in years.  I get up with a smile on my face each dayJ.  I can sleep at night pain free! I can walk, clean house, and stand more than I ever could! I can even vacuum the carpet!  `My knees have improved 90% from the day I walked into the DFW Spine & Joint Center.  The staff is wonderful! They make each patient feel special.  I will miss seeing them and talking to them.–Babette M., Irving, Texas

Cold Laser Therapy for Knee Pain Got Me Walking Again- With Very Little Pain…

I am very pleased with my results.  My knee feels about 80% better than it did prior to my treatment. I am amazed with my results.  I tried everything before trying Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.  I tried acupuncture, shots, and various other things that didn’t work.  Before I started treatments I could barely walk- I could not go up and down the stairs.  It was very painful to ride long distances in a car and I had a lot of trouble getting out of a chair.  I felt that a knee replacement was the next step. I had a knee replacement already on my other knee so I wanted to try cold laser therapy first (knee replacement surgery was my last resort). Now I can stand, walk and go up and down stairs with very little pain in my knee. — Garland S., Granbury, Texas

I Did Not Want to Endure Another Knee Replacement Surgery…

I had my right knee replaced in December of 2009, and I was hoping to get some pain relief before my other knee got that painful.  Before I started Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I had pain sleeping at night, and I had to put a pillow under my knees.  I tossed and turned at night just trying to get comfortable.  I could not straighten my knee without discomfort.  Going up and down stairs- a grinding sound occurred and it hurt around the knee cap area.  It hurt more going down stairs than going up stairs.

From the second session with Dr. Schnee I have been able to sleep all night very comfortably.  I have no pain in the back of my knee when I try to straighten it out.  I haven’t had the shooting pain in my knee when walking or climbing stairs.  I am able to walk longer distances at a time without the severe pain in my knees.

Every person that I have come into contact at this establishment has been so friendly, helpful, courteous, knowledgeable yet very professional. Coming here has been a pleasure.–Nancy H., Garland, Texas

Knee Injections Weren’t Working So The Surgeon Recommended Total Knee Replacements…

Prior to coming to the DFW Spine & Joint Center I was told that I would need a total knee replacement.  I had arthroscopic knee surgery in 1997.  My knee pain and stiffness was very intense.

When my problem was at its worst I couldn’t stand up and walk.  I couldn’t sleep very well because I couldn’t turn over on the right side.  Before the cold laser therapy program with Dr. Schnee, I was going to a pain clinic every four weeks to get shots in my knee.  Now after completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program, I am very pleased with my overall experience and I feel that my overall percentage of improvement has been around 80%.–Harry H., Frisco, Texas

Dr. Schnee Helped Me After I Was Told That I Couldn’t Have A Knee Replacement…

Before Dr. Schnee’s Cold laser therapy treatments my knees were extremely painful and swollen (due to bone on bone and baker’s cysts).  I had difficulty walking, sleeping, and getting up and down from a chair.  I tried arthritis medication and cortisone injections which did not help.  I am very pleased and I would say I am experiencing maybe 50% less pain in my knees which is wonderful-Thanks!–

Pat R., Carthage, Texas

Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Therapy for Knee Pain Program Got Me Sleeping through the Night Again…

My doctor told me that I would need both knees replaced.  I was up all parts of the night.  I just couldn’t sleep because of the cramps in my legs.  I had a hard time getting up out of a chair and I could not get up off the floor.  I am very pleased with the results with Dr. Schnee’s Cold laser therapy program.  I am walking better and I don’t have the pain in my knees like I had before.

Norman H., Pottsboro, Texas

Cold Laser Dallas Doctor is Helping Knee Pain Sufferers Walk ‘Normal’ Again

Cold Laser Dallas Doctor is Helping Knee Pain Sufferers Walk ‘Normal’ Again

Obviously, if you’ve been limping over a prolonged period of time due to knee pain, it will cause havoc on the other joints in your body.  Not only will limping force the opposite knee to wear down faster, but it will also wear down the opposite hip.  This is the reason that it’s vital to fix the knee that is hurting you.  After all, the last thing any knee pain sufferer wants is to cause damage to the opposite knee or hip that wasn’t causing problems to begin with.

Prior to receiving cold laser knee treatments and physiotherapy from Cold laser Dallas Doctor, Dr. Alexandra Schnee D.C., Tom G., a ground support mechanic for the airlines, experienced severe pain in his left knee that kept him from standing up straight and walking ‘normally’.  “Since completing treatments there is a 80-90% improvement [in my knee] and there is no tenderness in the knee at all.”  He also states, “I can now walk normally without a limp, and I can walk up stairs [without any problems].  Before starting treatments with Dr. Schnee I couldn’t walk, or sleep comfortably.  I had cortisone injections from my family doctor and pain pills but nothing worked.  I am very pleased with Dr. Schnee’s knee pain treatments.”

If your knee pain is keeping you from walking ‘normally’ it’s time to do something about it; otherwise, you may risk damaging the opposite knee and hip in the process.

Cold Laser Therapy for Knees - How Cold Laser Therapy Works

Cold laser therapy is a painless, non-surgical treatment for knee pain available in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and clinics all over the world.  Cold lasers are effective in accelerating the healing process for injured tissue, for pain relief, and for eliminating inflammation.

How Cold Laser Therapy Works…

Healing:

According to the National Academy of Science, the overall effect of cold laser therapy is acceleration in tissue repair… Individuals with knee pain usually have tissues in and around the knee joint that are often irritated and damaged, and research indicates that cold lasers have the greatest healing effect on unhealthy tissue. Cold lasers emit a specific wavelength of light which stimulate, excite and are absorbed by the mitochondria (the brain of the cell).  As a result, more ATP (adenosine triphosphate) or usable energy is produced.  Since the cell is re-invigorated with more energy, it is finally able to heal and repair itself thereby healing the injured area.

Pain Reduction:

According to Harvard Medical School, cold laser therapy effectively removes the pain signal at the source by rebalancing the sodium potassium pathway in the nerve cell…  Knee pain sufferers usually have pain walking, standing, climbing stairs with many suffering from knee pain even at night.  Knee pain is due primarily to the nerves in and around the knee joint being irritated.  More commonly with arthritis knee pain the lining of the bone or the synovium (which has trillions of little nerve endings) gets irritated and inflamed.  When nerves get irritated there is an imbalance of sodium-potassium ions in the nerve cell, which alters the chemical potential of the cell resulting in pain.  Cold laser therapy allows a rebalancing of the sodium-potassium pump by increasing the porosity of the cellular membrane.

Inflammation:

According to the periodical, Lasers in Surgery in Medicine, cold laser therapy increases the production of nitric oxide which helps reduce inflammation, improves oxygenation to the area and improves the overall healing ability of the injured tissue…It is not uncommon for patients with knee pain to have inflammation or swelling in the knee.  When soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, and tendons) becomes injured, inflammation is common as a result of the body responding to protect the injured area.  Pain is a byproduct of inflammation caused by the extra fluid in and around the joint exerting pressure on the sensitive nerve endings.  Naturally our bodies produce nitric oxide to reduce swelling in an area, which acts to relax muscles, dilate capillaries, improve blood flow and help protect against further cell injury.  Cold laser therapy increases the production of naturally occurring nitric oxide, which reduces inflammation, improves oxygenation to the area and improves the healing ability of the injured tissue.

Having performed over 35,000 cold laser therapy knee pain treatments, Dr. Alexandra K. Schnee, D.C. is considered one of the leading authorities on the topic of cold laser therapy for knee pain.  In addition to practicing at the DFW Spine & Joint Center in Irving, TX, she is an author, researcher and consultant on the topic of cold laser therapy for knee pain.  Dr. Schnee Cold Laser Knee Program incorporates very specific treatment protocols that she developed along with other physiotherapies. I had arthroscopic knee surgery in my left knee in 11-05-08. I had a lot of knee pain in my left knee when I walked up or down any incline.  Since completing knee treatments with Dr. Schnee I can go up and down stairs with no pain and my knee feels 90% improvement.  I am very pleased with the knee treatment.  Kenneth C., Dallas Texas

Resident from Dallas, TX  No Longer Experiences Knee Pain At Night!

On a scale from 0-10 my knee was an 8 on a pain scale.  I could barely walk.  I could barely bend my knees to step up or down or off a curb.  I could not get on my knees.  The pain kept me from sleeping comfortably.  I wore an ACE knee brace to get relief and I took Ibuprofen.  I also rubbed my knees with Aspercreme.  Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can walk without the stiffness in my knees.  I can bend my knees.  I can step up and down on stairs, and I can sleep at night.  I am pleased with the results. The cold laser treatments and knee therapy helped reduce the swelling and pain.  Sandra M., Dallas, Texas

Dallas Texas Resident No Longer Has Burning Knee Pain!

My knee pain was severe and constant.  Walking for extended periods of time, sleeping at night, sitting for any length of time and getting out of a tub would all cause knee pain.  I had physical therapy and I did home exercises for my knee which did not give me any relief.  I also had gone to a chiropractor and had adjustments.  I was told by four different orthopedic doctors to have knee surgery.  Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program the burning has subsided (stopped) and I am sleeping without pain.   I am not limping as much anymore, and I can even stand for a longer period of time.  Even a casual acquaintance told me I seemed to be walking better.  Nina C. Dallas, Texas

Knee Pain in Females Increases with Changes in BMI | Cold Laser Therapy for Knee Pain Dallas-Fort Worth

A report published online on July 7th, 2011 in Arthritis Care & Research by researchers at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom found that women who gained weight over a fifteen year period had greater knee pain in both knees.  The study followed 594 females body mass index over a period of fifteen years and discovered that an increase in body mass index was associated with greater knee pain in both knees regardless of the severity of osteoarthritis diagnosed on the x-rays.

Basically, this study reported on something women already intuitively know… that is the greater the weight gain the more stress it places on the knees.

Of course, ask any woman, losing weight for many is always easier said than done.  If you’ve ever experienced severe knee pain then the last thing you want to do is walk, stand, or even exercise.  Most women suffering with severe knee pain would love to be able to be active again but sometimes the pain is so unbearable that this seems impossible.

So if you’re an overweight female and are suffering from knee pain and cannot exercise because the pain is unbearable then you should consider Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Therapy Knee Program.  Dr. Schnee’s program is for those who want to experience knee pain relief and improvement in function, non-surgically, so that they can get back to exercising comfortably.

Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C.  has been helping patients get knee pain relief for over ten years.  She is one of the most experienced Cold Laser Therapy Doctors for the treatment of knee pain in the United States.  Her knee program consists of specific protocols she designed to treat knee pain, along with other non-invasive modalities.  Cold Laser treatments for knee pain are safe and effective.

The bottom line is if knee pain is keeping you from exercising then call Dr. Alexandra K. Schnee’s office, at the DFW Spine & Joint Center at 214-596-1051.

Treating Knee Pain From A Baker’s Cyst, Meniscus Tear And Arthritis With Cold Laser Therapy

By · August 11, 2010 · Filed in Baker's Cyst, Meniscus Tear, Osteoarthritis, Testimonial · Comments Off

A Dallas Residents Story Of Overcoming Knee Pain And Avoiding Knee Surgery With This High Tech Treatment

The following is the true story of Jill V. a 61 year old Plano resident diagnosed with arthritis, a meniscus tear, a Baker’s Cyst, and near bone on bone and the knee treatments she tried before she finally found Dr. Schnee.

“In September of 2009 my pain was focused on the inside of my left knee.  From time to time it would vary to the back portion of the knee.  Unless one has actually experienced this type of knee pain, it is hard for someone to grasp how intense this can be.  The pain was sharp, stabbing, burning and achy.  Walking, climbing stairs, sitting, sleeping were all uncomfortable.  I had severe swelling in the back of my knee.  The pain was constant.  I was always groaning every time I took a step.  It was crippling me and my well being.  It obviously changed my life and not for the better.  In December 2009 I needed to seek some options and some answers.

After about 4 months of agonizing knee pain in my left knee I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon by my primary care doctor.  First, he took a knee x-ray and an MRI which revealed inflammation, some arthritis, a meniscus tear, a bakers cyst and near bone on bone.  He explained what this all meant and I begged him for a cortisone injection.  For 4 days I had no pain in my knee.  I was brand new, but that didn’t last long.  After the four days I was in excruciating pain again.  Then he sent me for physical rehabilitation.  I did stretches, used heat/ice packs, and lotions.  I was still hurting in January of 2010.  There was NO RELIEF in sight.  So in February he recommended a series of three injections called Euflexxa.  These injections don’t tickle.  They are painful.  They first start out by draining the knee fluid with a syringe and then they follow that with the injection.  I believe anyone who has had these injections will tell you they ‘hurt’, this is not an exaggeration. The result of these painful injections?  Zero, the Euflexxa did not work on me and the pain never lessened.  In March, I was referred to the ‘Brace Guy’.  This was just another added expense and the brace was heavy and burdensome.  In May 2010 I read about Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Pain Solution Program.

She was my last hope otherwise the orthopedic knee doctor told me that we would have to discuss knee surgery.

I completed Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program in July and now I can walk without knee pain, climb stairs with no effort.  I can sit and get up from a chair or bed without hesitation on the first step.  The swelling in the back of the knee from the Baker’s Cyst is minimal.  And I can pretty much do anything I want to do now.

I am so pleased with the results of this program! I thoroughly enjoyed each and every treatment especially the wonderful massage at the end of each visit.  What a treat! Each therapist is precise and extremely adequate with each session.   Dr. Schnee explained to me from the very beginning that because my knee condition was severe that I would probably not be 100% pain free. But I feel like I am 100% because I am 85-90% pain free! For me these treatments have been very successful.  I am walking without pain.   I don’t wake up during the night whenever I move my leg.  There are times that I even forget my knee ever hurt so badly.   I have NO sharp, stabbing or burning pain in my knee.  It has definitely helped me get back on track.

Anyone who has issues with their knee needs this program it WILL work for you too.

Does Cold Laser Therapy Help Ease ‘Bone On Bone’ Knee Pain?

By · August 10, 2010 · Filed in Cold Laser Therapy, Osteoarthritis, Testimonial · Comments Off

‘Bone on Bone’ knee pain is probably the most common condition that I get asked about either from individuals that don’t want knee surgery or are not candidates for knee replacement surgery.   At the DFW Spine & Joint Center our Cold Laser Knee Program has helped hundreds of patients avoid knee surgery.  It is not unusual for individuals to complete treatments with 50-80% less pain, more mobility, and an overall better quality of life.

Let me be clear, if you are suffering from ‘bone on bone’ knee pain the pain isn’t directly due to a lack of cartilage in the knee.  (Cartilage doesn’t have any nerve endings therefore there are no nerve fibers to transmit pain. For example, there are a lucky few that have been diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’ and do not have any knee pain.  The only thing they experience is weakness in the knee joint).   Instead, ‘bone on bone knee pain’ is due to the nerve endings in the bone being irritated.  Overactive or irritated nerve fibers are the main reason a patient feels pain.  Many times people will complain of pain and tenderness on the bone itself or in severe cases a patient will complain of a burning or searing type pain.  Either way, cold laser therapy helps eliminate/reduce ‘bone on bone’ knee pain through several different processes.  The following list is just some of the events that occur with cold laser therapy to help decrease knee pain.

  1. There is an increase in Endorphins
  2. Cold laser therapy reduces excitation or irritation of C-fibers (the sensory nerve fibers that transmit pain)
  3. Cold laser therapy stimulates and increases Nitric Oxide production.  Nitric oxide is important because it helps normalize cell action potential and indirectly vasodilates nerve cells which enhances oxygenation.
  4. Restores and Increases nerve cell action potential.  Cold laser therapy allows the action potential to be restored in nerves thereby decreasing the constant ‘firing’ of the nerves.
  5. Bradykinin levels decrease.  By reducing bradykinin levels this results in pain reduction.
  6. There’s an increase in the release of acetylcholine.  Acetylcholine helps normalize nerve signal transmission which in turn helps reduce of pain.
  7. There is a normalization of ion channels. Cold Laser therapy promotes normalization of Ca++, NA+, K+ concentrations resulting in pain reduction.

Mr. George B., an 81 year old Lewisville resident is a good example of a patient who completed care at the DFW Spine & Joint Center because of severe bone on bone knee pain. He was told by his orthopedic surgeon that his knees were ‘bone on bone’ and that he needed both knees replaced.  The following is what he had to say about his condition and Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program:

“I had severe pain in both knees anytime I attempted to get up from a chair or whenever I would go up and down stairs.  I tried cortisone injections and I had the fluid drained from me knees, [but it didn’t really help me].  I also had to use crutches when my knees were really hurting just to walk around.  I had arthroscopic knee surgery in 1976 to clean out my knee and clean the bone chips from my right knee, and I was told that I would need knee replacements because I was ‘bone on bone’ but I never went through with the knee replacement surgery.  Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can now climb down stairs much easier and also I don’t have as much of a problem walking on rough or uneven surfaces.  I also can get up from a seated position with less pain in my knees.  I am pleased with the ‘big’ improvements that have taken place.”

Another patient who sought Dr. Schnee’s help to avoid knee surgery was Jill V., a 61 year old from Plano, Texas.  Ms. V. was diagnosed with arthritis, a meniscus tear, a Baker’s Cyst and ‘bone on bone’ and after completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser treatments she can now walk without knee pain, climb stairs without any effort,  and she can sit and get up from a chair or bed without hesitation.  According to Ms. V. after completing the treatments, “[I] Pretty much, [do] anything I want to do.”

These are just two examples out of the hundreds of patients diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’ knee pain that have successfully completed Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program and were able to avoid knee surgery. Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program is not for everyone. It is specifically for patients searching for non-invasive alternatives to knee surgery, medications, and knee injections.  It’s for patients suffering from chronic knee pain that want to avoid knee surgery or have post surgical knee pain.

There are patients who are not candidates for Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program and have no other option but to undergo knee surgery. To find out if you’re a candidate for Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program call the DFW Spine & Joint Center at 214-596-1051.

Knee Injections Never Gave Patient Knee Pain Relief

By · May 24, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Testimonial · Comments Off

“Both knees hurt when I tried to walk for any distance.  The pain caused me to stop and sit whenever I could.  I could never squat, or bend my knees even as much as a 45 degree angle.  Exercise with any movements that required bending or sitting for an extended time without propping my right knee up was difficult.  The orthopedic surgeon x-rayed both knees and said I would need total knee replacements when I couldn’t stand the pain anymore.  He also gave me cortizone shots in both knees about twice over a period of a year or more.  Neither shot gave me knee pain relief longer than a couple of days.

Since completing Cold laser treatments with Dr. Schnee it is now possible for me to stand for at least 30 minutes to an hour, which is much more than before.  There is less pain when I walk now and I hope this will continue getting better.  My overall percentage of improvement is between 40-50% or more.   I have more mobility without as much knee pain!

Four Years Ago, Two Orthopedic Doctors Recommended Total Knee Replacement Surgery…

By · May 11, 2010 · Filed in Cold Laser Therapy, DWF Spine and Joint Center, Knee Pain, Knee Surgery, Testimonial · Comments Off

“Before starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I could not walk properly. Four years ago two orthopedic doctors recommended knee replacement surgery.  I did not do it!

Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can jump out of bed with no fear of my legs (knees) giving way.  Moreover, I can walk with less pain, and I have more mobility.  I can walk up stairways without having to climb up one step at a time and without having to stop to rest midway.  Now, I’m walking more naturally, I have less pain, stiffness in my knees, and less swelling.

In general I have 70% overall improvement in my knees.”
