Harvard Medical School, NASA, The US Navy – Scientific Breakthroughs Using Cold Laser Therapy

Since the invention of  low-level laser therapy (LLLT or cold laser therapy) over forty years ago it has been mostly known for its use in reducing pain, inflammation and edema, promoting healing of wounds, healing deeper tissue and nerve problems, and preventing tissue damage.  For years, where conventional medicine (drugs, injections, surgery) has failed in treating many chronic, degenerative and painful musculoskeletal conditions, cold laser therapy has proven to be more effective.

However, recently all of that has changed.

Cold laser therapy is no longer just being used for musculoskeletal conditions.

Scientists are currently investigating cold laser therapy’s use for treating spinal cord injuries, stroke, and both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

Cold laser therapy is also being trialed by NASA for manned missions into space and has already been used in Antarctica and on US Navy submarines.  (Cold lasers are used because in these extreme environments people do not heal very well after injuries)

In addition, at BiOS 2009 (part of SPIE Photonics West) researchers were invited from Harvard Medical School, the US Navy and NASA along with a dozen others to present the clinical benefits of cold laser therapy and its effects on stroke recovery, restoring eyesight after laser injury, healing age-related macular degeneration, improving heart muscle after myocardial infarction, spinal cord injuries, and sperm motility. The full benefits of cold laser therapy for treatment are just beginning to be realized.

Recent findings have changed everything we know about cold laser therapy. It is no longer used just for musculoskeletal conditions…it is anticipated that LLLT technology could be used in almost every hospital department throughout the world. [1]

If you are suffering from knee pain and you want to avoid knee surgery then Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program may be able to help you.  Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program is considered a complete treatment plan that combines low-level laser therapy (cold laser therapy), non-weight bearing exercises, and other modalities that promote rehabilitation of the knee.

At the DFW Spine & Joint Center we have the ability to use five different types of cold lasers so that every patient’s program is unique depending on whether they suffer from arthritis, ‘bone on bone’, meniscus tears, bursitis, tendonitis, Baker’s Cyst, post surgical arthroscopic knee pain, or a combination of the listed conditions.
