Dallas Cold Laser Doctors’ Knee Program Helps Fort Worth ‘Bone on Bone’ Knee Pain Sufferer Without Knee Surgery

By Dr Schnee · October 5, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Testimonial · No Comments »

“Before starting treatments with Dr. Alexandra Schnee at the DFW Spine & Joint Center my knees hurt all the time and I felt pain with every step.  Climbing stairs was almost impossible and even leisure activities were a real challenge to perform.  I was on so many medications that it affected my kidney function so I had to stop taking them.  I also had arthroscopic knee surgery on my left knee and I was told by the orthopedic surgeon that I needed total knee replacements on both knees.

I did not want knee surgery and I couldn’t live with the pain I was constantly in so I decided to try Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.  I am so pleased with my improvement! I can walk a lot easier now and I no longer need to use my cane to get around.  My knees feel at least 50% better than before completing this program and the little pain I do feel is bearable.”

By Dr Schnee · September 30, 2010 · Filed in Cold Laser Therapy, Knee Pain, Meniscus Tear, Testimonial · No Comments »

“Before starting Dr. Alexandra Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I had an MRI that stated I had a medial meniscus tear and severe arthritis in the left knee.  I was told by an orthopedic surgeon to get arthroscopic knee surgery but I did not want to get knee surgery this young.  I felt a constant ache, burning pain and tightening in the left knee.  I wasn’t sleeping at night and I couldn’t walk for any length of time without my knee hurting.  I had a very difficult time doing house work and I could not bend down.

Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program at the DFW Spine & Joint Center I can now sleep all night, climb stairs, and I can walk distances.  I am very pleased with the results!  I am probably 85% stronger today! I now have more good days then bad days and I have some days that my knee feels PERFECT!

Top 7 Foods that Are Guaranteed to Make Your Knee Pain Worse

By Dr Schnee · September 29, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain · 1 Comment »

The following lists of foods create an inflammatory reaction in the body.  If your diet primarily consists of them then you are guaranteed to make more your knee pain worse.

  1. Sugar: A high intake of sugar is linked to an increase inflammatory response in the body, obesity and Type II Diabetes.
Did you know? Drinking one can of soda is equal to consuming 10-16 cubes of sugar a day.
  2. Starches:Avoid white flour, white bread, white rice, noodles, and pasta.   Most of these products are refined and are stripped of fiber and Vitamin B.
Did you know? If you’re on a diet starches should be avoided because most of them are filled with empty calories.
  3. Cooking Oils: Vegetable oils have high amounts of omega 6 content and low omega 3 content.  A diet consistently high in omega 6 and low in omega 3 promotes inflammation in the body. Over time this imbalance may promote heart disease and cancer.  Replace vegetable oil with organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.
Did you know? Most restaurants use vegetable oil to cook their food.
  4. Trans Fats:Trans fats can be found in fast foods, deep fried foods, commercially baked goods, and products cooked in partially hydrogenated oil, margarine, or vegetable shortening.
Did you know? Manufacturers can advertise that their product has zero trans fat even if it has 0.5 g of this toxic fat.  Inorganic peanut butter is a good example of this.
  5. Dairy Products:Milk, yogurt, cheese are products that are common allergens.
Did you know? Sixty percent of the world’s population is unable to digest milk.
  6. Red Meat:Red meat has a high amount of arachadonic acid (omega 6) which increases inflammation in the body.
Did you know? Grass fed beef contains higher amounts of omega-3’s and has less saturated fat.
  7. Artificial Food Additives:MSG, Aspartame, and other preservatives can trigger an inflammatory response in the body.  Avoid drinking diet sodas, eating Chinese food, and eating frozen dinners.
Did you know? Aspartame (the sweetener in Diet sodas) has been linked to Multiple Sclerosis.

The foods listed above are just some of the foods that cause chronic inflammation in the body.  Chronic inflammation doesn’t just exacerbate knee pain it also sets the stage for more serious diseases such as coronary heart disease and cancer.

Choosing the right foods will make a difference in your knee pain and more importantly your overall health.

High Heels May Result in Osteoarthritis Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · September 28, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

Kinesiology researchers from Iowa State University found that wearing high heels can contribute to joint degeneration and osteoarthritis of the knee.  Danielle Barkema a graduate student and Phil Martin a kinesiology professor tested three heel heights on 15 women.  They used flat shoes, 2 inch heels and 3.5 inch heels and conducted walking trials with each of the 15 women.  They used accelerometers and lab equipment to measure the forces acting on the knee joint when walking in heels.  The researchers found that increased heel height resulted in slower speeds and shorter stride lengths when walking.  In addition as the heels got higher the more strain was placed on the inner aspect of the joint; which over time could lead to degeneration of the cartilage and osteoarthritis of the knee.

The research suggests that wearing high heels increases the risk for the development of osteoarthritis of the knee.

However, researchers caution that more studies need to be conducted on a larger sample of women to definitively state whether wearing high heels leads to osteoarthritis of the knees.

In my experience, men (wearing cowboy boots) and women who already suffer from osteoarthritis of the knee have difficulty wearing heels because of the stress it places on the inner aspect of the knee joint.  In addition, patients with knee pain from meniscus tears will find that high heels exacerbate the pain. Typically, once they complete my Cold Laser Knee Program they are able to wear heels again without experiencing knee pain (even though I never recommend that a patient wears heels).

Nurse with Severe Knee Pain Gets Relief with Dallas Cold Laser Doctor, Alexandra Schnee’s Knee Program

“I suffered with severe knee pain in both knees for years. I was unable to walk for short distances and I was constantly limping.  I couldn’t sleep thru the night [because my knee pain was unbearable].  I was diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’, severe arthritis, and a Baker’s Cyst.  I took cortisone injections and pain medications but none of those were effective.  I was told by the orthopedic surgeon that I needed two knee replacements in the future [which I didn’t want].

Since completing Dr. Alexandra Schnee’s Knee Program I am now able to walk for 1 mile and I am able to stand for 15-20 minutes at a time without experiencing knee pain.  I am also able to sleep thru the night without knee pain.  I am pleased with my overall experience and results, and my knees are 80% better then when I started with Dr. Schnee.

This patient was able to enjoy her vacation time in Hawaii without having to fear that knee pain would dictate her activities.  She’s also able to work at the hospital and take care of her patients without having anxiety about having knee pain.”

Muscle Pain Causing Your Knee Pain? Try Eating Ginger

By Dr Schnee · September 25, 2010 · Filed in Exercise, Health, Knee Pain · No Comments »

If you’ve never eaten raw ginger you may want to start.  A new study reported in The Journal of Pain, published by the American Pain Society states that taking daily doses of heat-treated or raw ginger helps relieve muscle pain by nearly 25%.  Past research has shown that ginger may have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving or analgesic properties similar to NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories).  So researchers from the University of Georgia and Georgia College and State University examined the effectiveness of ginger on 74 volunteers.  These volunteers were divided into three groups and were either given raw ginger, heated ginger, or placebo.  The volunteers were given ginger for 11 consecutive days after they completed 18 eccentric muscle exercises that induced muscle pain.

The results of the study indicated that the raw ginger lowered the muscle pain intensity by 25% and the heat treated ginger lowered it by 23%. The report did not indicate the amount of ginger given to the volunteers during this study.

Why Cold Laser Therapy and Exercises Are Better Options Then Knee Surgery for Osteoarthritis Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · September 24, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Knee Surgery, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

Nearly 27 million people suffer with osteoarthritis knee pain in the United States, and about 1 million arthroscopic knee surgeries are performed every year.  Arthroscopic knee surgery is a procedure where a scope and a small camera are inserted through a tiny incision.  Orthopedic surgeons use this procedure to remove damaged cartilage and remove loose bone chips in the knee.  Unfortunately, arthroscopic knee surgery leaves the knee with less cartilage which makes the knee vulnerable to future injuries, and arthritis. Because osteoarthritis in the knee worsens after surgery, and an individual’s symptoms don’t necessarily improve its effectiveness has been questioned.

Several studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine have indicated arthroscopic surgery should not be used for the treatment of osteoarthritis knee pain.  The first one was published in 2002 and found that arthroscopic knee surgery for the treatment of osteoarthritis knee pain was no better than a sham procedure.  The most recent study published in the September 2008 issue concluded that physiotherapy was as effective at relieving moderate to severe osteoarthritis knee pain as arthroscopic knee surgery.

In this recent study nearly 200 patients were randomly separated them into two groups.  The first group had physical therapy for three months to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee joint.  In addition, the group was prescribed medications and supplements.  The medications included anti-inflammatories, Tylenol, glucosamine and chondroitin.  The other group had physical therapy, medications, and arthroscopic knee surgery.  After two years both groups reported the same pain levels, function and quality of life.

“This study offers hope and encouragement to persons with osteoarthritis who would like to avoid the pain and emotional toll of surgery, “says American Physical Therapy Association president R. Scott Ward.

Arthroscopic knee surgery for osteoarthritis knee pain “probably isn’t terribly helpful compared to just medication and physical therapy,” states Dr. C. David Geier Jr. a representative for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

Christopher M. Powers, co-director of Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Lab at the University of Southern California added. “Many times knee pain is associated with abnormal movement patterns that cause increased stress on the joint.  Arthroscopic surgery does little to correct the dynamic factors that may be contributing to knee pain and pathology. These findings reinforce the need for a comprehensive treatment approach for such patients.”

This study reinforces my belief that cold laser therapy and exercises are better options than knee surgery for osteoarthritis knee pain. It’s always better to try conservative non-invasive treatments first before going under the knife! At the DFW Spine & Joint Center we combine cold laser therapy, along with other physiotherapy modalities and exercises to strengthen and rehabilitate the knee. Your treatments are customized to your condition.   If you live in the Dallas, Fort Worth area and want to avoid arthroscopic knee surgery call 214-596-1051 or fill out the form on the right side of the screen and we will mail you a FREE Report about Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.

National Institutes of Health: Proper Knee Alignment May Prevent Arthritis Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · September 3, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

The National Institutes of Health recently conducted a research study on knee alignment and how it affects the knee joint.  A research team followed 2,713 volunteers from Birmingham and Iowa City.  The volunteers were between the ages of 50-79.  All of them either had arthritis in their knees or they were considered at high risk for developing arthritis because they were either overweight, had a previous knee injury, or had undergone previous knee surgery.

First, X-rays were taken and knee alignment was measured.   The alignment was measured and the angle was noted at the point the femur (upper leg) and tibia (lower leg) intersected at the knee joint.  Anything more or less than a 2 degree difference from the normal 180 degree was noted.  X-rays and measurements were taken again 2 years later.

The research team discovered that in volunteers whose knee alignment measured a 2 degree difference (more or less) there was a 1.5 times greater risk for developing arthritis compared to those with a normal (180 degree) alignment.

In a healthy knee 70% of all the force is placed on the medial aspect of the knee (inside). If  the knee joint is out of  alignment the stress on the inside of the knee increases which in turn wears down the inside of the knee at a faster rate.  The NIH research team concluded that if a misaligned knee is corrected early on arthritis could be prevented.

To correct poor alignment of the knee visit a chiropractor, and wear good shoes that provide proper support.  An orthotic may be necessary if you are flat footed or if you have too high of an arch.  In addition, a chiropractor who specializes in the knee joint can give you proper exercises to strengthen and provide support for proper knee alignment.

Poor Mental Health May Be Making Your Osteoarthritis Knee Pain Worse

By Dr Schnee · August 28, 2010 · Filed in Cold Laser Therapy, Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

According to researchers at UC Davis School of Medicine osteoarthritis knee pain is directly related to an individual’s state of mental health.  The study was conducted by Dr. Wise, a researcher from UC Davis, and his colleagues. They were curious about why osteoarthritis knee pain sufferers reported day to day variations in the intensity of osteoarthritis knee pain when there were no actual structural changes to the knee. The study concluded that people with better mental health felt less pain then those with poor mental health.

Dr. Wise stated, “Pain varies over time, both over extended periods and over shorter periods. The same person can feel little or no pain in their knee or hip and later they can feel moderated to severe pain even when the extent of damage to the knee or hip joint as seen on x-ray imaging remains the same.”

The study found that a mental health score of 28-30 was associated with less osteoarthritis pain.  A score of 13-22 was associated with a higher pain scale.  Patients scoring between 13-22 had double the risk of increased pain flare ups as compared to participants in the 28-30 range.

Besides non-invasive treatments such as vitamins, supplements, exercise, and cold laser therapy:  mental health treatment may be another important factor in improving osteoarthritis knee pain.
