Four Years Ago, Two Orthopedic Doctors Recommended Total Knee Replacement Surgery…

By Dr. Alexandra Schnee, DC · May 11, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Testimonial · No Comments »

Before starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I could not walk properly. Four years ago two orthopedic doctors recommended knee replacement surgery.  I did not do it!

Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can jump out of bed with no fear of my legs (knees) giving way.  Moreover, I can walk with less pain, and I have more mobility.  I can walk up stairways without having to climb up one step at a time and without having to stop to rest midway.  Now, I’m walking more naturally, I have less pain, stiffness in my knees, and less swelling.

In general I have 70% overall improvement in my knees.

Bone on Bone Knee Pain is 80% Gone for Cold Laser Patient

My (knee) pain was very severe, all the time.  It was a burning, searing pain that was constant.  I could barely walk.     I couldn’t bend my leg.  I could hardly walk up stairs.  I took baby steps.  Getting up from a sitting position was very difficult.  I woke up all the time from the pain.  I tried cortisone shots.  I had SYNVISC shots.  I tried Euflexxa shots, and I was on strong pain medication.  I was told I needed a knee replacement on my left knee, (and that my right one wasn’t much better.)

Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can walk much better without pain.  I sleep better, and stairs are no longer hard for me.  I am very, very pleased.  I wanted to be 50% out of pain but instead I am 80% out of pain!  When I can I will have my right knee done as well (with Dr. Schnee).

Could Exercise Be Making Your Knee Pain Worse?

By Dr. Alexandra Schnee, DC · April 26, 2010 · Filed in Exercise, Knee Pain · No Comments »

Most individuals suffering from a meniscus tear, cartilage loss, severe arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, or a baker’s cyst in the knee find it impossible to exercise without experiencing knee pain.  ‘No pain, no gain’ should not be the motto when it comes to exercising if you have been diagnosed with a knee problem.

Knee exercises should only be performed if the soft tissue in and around your knee joint are not damaged.  If you have been diagnosed with a meniscus tear, tendonitis, bursitis or a baker’s cyst you WILL MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE BY EXERCISING.  In addition, if you’ve  been diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’ or severe arthritis then there is a 60% chance that you will tear the meniscus or remaining cartilage in your knee if you  exercise or do anything that stresses the knee joint.  The reason for this is that the cartilage/meniscus in an arthritic knee is drier and more brittle and tears easier than the cartilage in a healthy knee.

Again, exercise should only be performed once the muscles, ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and meniscus in the knee are healed and repaired; otherwise, exercise will only compound the problem and cause further damage to the joint.  Once the tissues in and around the joint have been treated properly then the FINAL STEP is to rehabilitate the muscles around the joint by exercising.  Otherwise, if you don’t treat what is causing your knee pain exercise will only COMPOUND THE PROBLEM AND FURTHER DAMAGE THE JOINT and the muscles around the joint will NEVER get stronger.

If you want your knee to get treated but do not want to undergo knee surgery then consider our Cold Laser Knee Program.  Most professional athletes undergo a series of cold laser treatments in combination with other modalities to get them back in the game quicker because it helps them avoid often career ending surgeries.

Cold lasers help reduce/eliminate pain and inflammation, repair and heal damaged/ irritated tissue.  In addition, Cold Lasers speed up the healing process so that you can get back to exercising again, safely without side-effects.  Our Cold Laser Knee Program is considered a complete treatment plan that combines low-level laser treatments (cold laser treatments), non-weight bearing exercises, and other modalities that promote rehabilitation of the knee.  Every patient’s program is unique depending on whether they suffer from arthritis, ‘bone on bone’, meniscus tears, bursitis, tendonitis, Baker’s Cyst, post surgical arthroscopic knee pain, or a combination of the listed conditions.

If you can’t exercise because you are suffering from knee pain due to cartilage loss, ‘bone on bone’, or osteoarthritis of the knee and you want to avoid surgery then Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program may be the answer to your knee problem. If you live in the Dallas/Fort Worth area call our office at 214- 596-1051 to find out if you’re a candidate for Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.

What Options Are Available When You’ve Already Tried Everything To Get Rid Of Your Knee Pain?

By Dr. Alexandra Schnee, DC · April 22, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain · No Comments »

What are your options when you’ve been suffering with severe knee pain for years, and you’ve already tried everything to get rid of the pain for instance injections (cortisone and/ or gel injections), prescription/ over the counter medications, and/or have had arthroscopic knee surgery and your knee is not any better?

The following is a list of options:

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

A)  Live with the pain. (Obviously, this is not something you want to hear when you’re dealing with pain.)

B) Get a partial or total knee replacement. (Definitely NOT a good option, and should always be the final step after all conservative measures have been exhausted.)

C) Try more of the same things that didn’t get your knee better the first time around. (for example: medications, surgery and injections.) (Not a smart option)

In my opinion this shouldn’t even be an option.  I have never understood why someone would allow an orthopedic surgeon to perform arthroscopic knee surgery for a second time or undergo another round of knee injections if they weren’t successful the first time around.

D) Exercise.

Exercising the muscles around the knee joint is a crucial part of recovery.  However, it is only one step in the recovery process, and normally it is the last step. Even though patients are often told to exercise it is usually impossible for someone suffering with severe knee pain. If you are experiencing pain while exercising STOP BECAUSE YOU COULD BE CREATING MORE DAMAGE TO THE KNEE JOINT.

E) Cold Laser Therapy.

This is the final and in my opinion the best option for patients suffering from knee pain.

Cold lasers are safe and effective.  There is over 40 years of research proving its effectiveness in treating joint, and soft tissue ailments.  Cold lasers are used to help reduce/eliminate knee pain and inflammation, repair and heal damaged tissues in and around the knee joint, and speed up the healing process.  Cold lasers allow you to get back to living your life pain-free again without the need for medications, injections or surgery.

If you’ve already exhausted all of your options and don’t want a knee replacement then call our office.  You’ll be glad you did.  The only thing you’ll regret is not calling us sooner.

If you are suffering with knee pain then Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program is considered a complete treatment plan that combines low-level laser treatments (cold laser treatments), non-weight bearing exercises, and other modalities that promote rehabilitation of the knee.

Call Me or Live With Your Knee Pain

By Dr. Alexandra Schnee, DC · April 16, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain · No Comments »

“Call me when you’re ready to get your knee replaced.  Until then there’s nothing more I can do. You’ll have to live with the pain.”

Obviously, this is not something you want to hear when you’re dealing with severe knee pain.

But unfortunately this may sound familiar to many of you dealing with knee pain for years.

Should you be made to suffer just because you don’ want your knee replaced?  What if you’re never ready to get your knee replaced?

I believe no one should have to live with knee pain.   I also believe that your doctor should offer you EVERY option available (including cold laser therapy), and it should be your decision to choose the best option for you.

Your quality of life shouldn’t be reduced to nothing just because you don’t want to undergo a knee replacement.  I have treated hundreds of patients with knee pain and almost every one of them has told me that they would have started our Cold Laser Knee Program sooner IF THEY HAD JUST KNOWN ABOUT THE TREATMENTS.  Most surgeons won’t tell you about non-invasive solutions only because that would mean you wouldn’t need to go back to them for medications, injections or surgery.  The bottom line is business would be taken away from them.

I believe a knee replacement should only be performed after all conservative measures have been exhausted, including cold laser treatments.   Once a partial or total knee replacement is performed there is no ‘turning back’.  Good or bad you’re stuck with the results.

I’ve been treating patients since 2001 and our Cold Laser Knee Program has never hurt or killed anyone.  Cold laser treatments won’t harm you in anyway.  Death, blood clots, infections and rashes are possible side effects with surgery, medications, and injections NOT Cold laser treatments.  As a matter of fact, there are NO side effects with treatments (except maybe mild soreness after the first treatment that goes away with an ice pack).  If you’re one of the 8 out of 10 that are helped with treatments, and are able to avoid knee surgery then it’s certainly worth trying our program.

So instead of living with the pain and waiting for it to become so severe that it forces you to become wheelchair bound…BE PROACTIVE.  Call my office today and find out if you’re a candidate for our Cold Laser Knee Program.    Get the relief you want and the quality of life you desire without knee surgery!

Find Out How To Choose The Right ‘Cold Laser Doctor’ To Treat Knee Pain

No matter what a doctors degree of medical competence is a thorough understanding of laser therapy is needed in order to achieve successful results with a laser. Any licensed health care provider can own cold laser equipment but that does not make them proficient in its use.  I get daily phone calls and e-mails from patients who live out of state asking me to recommend a doctor in their area who is proficient with cold laser therapy and treating knee pain.  Unfortunately, I have no idea who to refer them too because I’m not familiar with out of state doctors.

The bottom line is if you’re looking for a doctor who uses cold laser’s to treat knee pain make sure that this is their specialty.   For example, you wouldn’t go to an orthopedic surgeon to operate on your knee if they specialized in the shoulder joint.

Again, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of doctors who advertise that they use cold lasers in their practice. But do they treat all sorts of conditions and joints or do they focus solely on knee problems?  And are cold lasers an integral part of their practice or just one of the many therapeutic treatments they use in practice?

Please note a Cold laser treatment in inexperienced hands is just as effective as not getting a cold laser treatment at all…

Since 2001, Dr. Schnee has been using cold lasers in her practice to treat patients suffering from knee pain so that they can avoid taking unnecessary medications, knee injections, and undergoing knee surgery. Patients travel from all over the DFW Metroplex, as well as from surrounding states and other countries to get treated by Dr. Schnee.  Her experience with cold lasers and treating knee problems is unsurpassed.

Doctors Are Still Prescribing Useless Arthroscopic Knee Surgeries and Gel Injections for Arthritic Knees

By Dr. Alexandra Schnee, DC · March 24, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Knee Surgery · 1 Comment »

Why is it that arthroscopic knee surgery and gel injections are recommended by surgeons even though there is overwhelming proof that these procedures DON’T WORK?

It is common knowledge in the medical field that arthroscopic knee surgery for arthritic knees is a useless procedure that clean outs and removes the cartilage/meniscus in the knee joint. The surgery actually contributes and exacerbates the very condition it’s supposed to treat….ARTHRITIS.

I believe that if patients diagnosed with arthritic knees fully understood the consequences of arthroscopic knee surgery they would not consent to undergo this procedure. Instead they would demand safer alternatives- that made sense.

Injections are also another option orthopedic surgeons offer patients suffering from arthritis knee pain.  But the results from SYNVISC and other gel injections are questionable and the results are not much better than arthroscopic knee surgery.   (Lately, the injections are losing popularity because patients are discovering that they are useless, and multiple studies have long proven them to be ineffective.  Just ask patients who’ve undergone a series of them.)

Why is it that  cold laser therapy which has been around for over 30 years, used all over the world, has thousands of double blind research studies proving its effectiveness, and does not have any side effects is hardly ever offered by an orthopedic surgeon as an option to arthritic knee pain?

Just follow the money…

There are surgeons that don’t refer patients out for cold laser therapy because they never come back to them for surgery.

It’s a shame.

My belief is doctors should work as a team to provide patients the VERY best care.  I am not against knee surgery.  I am against needless knee surgery. There are times a patient has no other choice, but to undergo knee surgery. If a patient needs surgery and understands the consequences of knee surgery they should have it done.  However, if a patient does not want or need knee surgery then ALL of their options should be reviewed including cold laser therapy.

Often patients have the perception that if their doctor doesn’t offer cold laser therapy or doesn’t know about it then it must be ‘quackery’.  Cold laser therapy is based on decades of proven science and is not ‘quackery’.  The results of cold laser treatments are far more impressive then injections or arthroscopic knee surgery.  Honestly, as a patient you should be more skeptical about arthroscopic surgery then cold laser therapy.  Just read the studies.  Furthermore, there are thousands of published, double blind research studies proving cold laser therapy’s effectiveness.

For years I’ve had patients come to see me for arthritic knee pain and I have not had one person tell me that the arthroscopic knee surgery or the rooster comb injections provided any significant pain relief. Yet everyday in my practice I have patients with arthritic knees undergo our Cold Laser Knee Program and get considerable pain relief. Most notice enough knee pain relief and an increase in strength in their knee joint that they are able to avoid knee replacement surgery.

Don’t believe me just read the hundreds of testimonials on my website from happy patients that have been able to avoid knee surgery.

At the DFW Spine & Joint Center we incorporate multiple painless modalities to get you out of pain.  Our office is unique because we utilize several different FDA cleared cold lasers that actually heal, repair and stimulate damaged tissue (cartilage, meniscus, muscle, tendon, and ligaments).  Besides using multiple cold lasers, we combine other safe modalities to reduce/eliminate tissue swelling, knee pain, and strengthen the knee joint.

If you suffer from osteoarthritis knee pain, ‘bone on bone’, meniscus tears, bursitis, tendonitis, Baker’s Cyst, post surgical arthroscopic knee pain, or a combination of the listed conditions then Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program may be able to help you.

Do The Series of ‘Gel Like’ Injections Really Work?

By Dr. Alexandra Schnee, DC · March 16, 2010 · Filed in Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

I’m referring to Hyaluronic acid injections aka rooster comb, gel  injections, viscosupplements, SYNVISC®, Hyalgen®, Euflexxa®, Supartz®, Orthovisc®, etc.

In my opinion the answer to this question is NO, NOT REALLY. Ultimately though you have to decide for yourself… Let me explain…

I have personally treated and talked to many patients who have had the series of three to five injections listed above (3-5 injections are usually administered over the course of a few weeks. Recently, SYNVISC® came out with one injection).  Most patients noticed little to no knee pain relief after the injections.  Some noticed that their knee pain and swelling got worse after the injections and they developed what’s known as a ‘hot knee’.  Others developed an allergic reaction to the shot and were unable to complete the series. Of the few that responded favorably to the injection they noticed temporary pain relief (which in all fairness the injections do claim that the relief is only temporary and usually lasts for up to 6 months).

There are multiple studies indicating that Hyaluronic injections are as effective as placebo injections,[1] [2] [3]and that the effect of anti-inflammatory drugs is 48 times greater than the effect of Hyaluronic acid injections (or rooster comb injections).[4]

One study indicated that the immediate pain relief patients experienced was not due to the injection itself, but from draining the fluid in the knee, a step doctors take prior to administering the injection to prep the knee.

Most patients mistakenly think that the injections add ‘cushioning’ or cartilage to their knee.  Unfortunately, this is not the case! IF the injections are successful the theory behind them is that they help lubricate the knee joint. The injections do NOT stimulate cartilage or increase the amount of cartilage in the knee.

Based on my personal experience and the multiple studies I have read (not the ones funded by the pharmaceutical companies, but ones written by a third party) about the injections.  I believe that there isn’t any real evidence that proves their effectiveness in the treatment of osteoarthritis knee pain.

On the other hand, I do believe that an individual should leave knee surgery as their very last option, so it’s certainly worth giving it   a ‘shot’.

If you suffer from knee pain due to cartilage loss, ‘bone on bone’, or osteoarthritis of the knee and you want to avoid a total knee replacement or you cannot undergo a total knee replacement due to other health problems then Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program may be the answer to your knee problem. Do Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Arthritis Knee Pain Really Work?

By Dr. Alexandra Schnee, DC · March 15, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain · No Comments »

No! Not according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers found that hyaluronic acid injections (rooster comb injections) given in the knee joint (for instance Hyalgan, Synvisc, Artzal, Suplasyn, BioHy, or Orthovisc) at best, had a small effect in the treatment of knee OA (osteoarthritis) compared with a placebo injection … Approximately 80% of the treatment effect of intra-articular hyaluronic acid was accounted for by the placebo effect of an intra-articular injection.

The study concluded that there was no real evidence to show that hyaluronic acid injections are more effective than placebo injections.

Even though the US Food and Drug Administration approved hyaluronic acid injections for the treatment of arthritis knee pain its effect is still controversial.  Unfortunately, the reason that hyaluronic acid injections are controversial is that most of the research studies published about the injections have been funded by the developers of the drug and therefore are considered bias.

The study mentioned above was performed by a third party, and to our knowledge was not funded by a drug company.
