Knee Injury Doesn’t Stop Skier from Winning A Race, But It Should Stop You!
Lindsey Vonn, the US women’s ski champion, won the World Cup Super G Race in Cortina d’ Ampezzo, Italy on Sunday. This is her 6th victory of the season. Vonn injured her left knee when she tried to keep herself from crashing while she was skiing downhill on Saturday. She told reporters that her knee was badly swollen and it hurt, but the injury obviously didn’t stop her from winning the race on Sunday.
Obviously, Vonn is a professional athlete, so immediately after her knee injury she began to have therapy on her knee. Moreover, she took a handful of pain-relievers right before the race so that she could get through it.
For those of you who are not professional athletes, and do not rely on participating in a sport for a paycheck it’s NEVER advised to continue exercising or doing any type of activity that causes knee pain immediately after a knee injury. Exercising with an injured knee in the acute phase only prolongs the healing process and worsens the injury.
About 1.3 million people every year in the U.S are seen in the emergency rooms for acute knee injuries. If you happen to be one of these people then give your knee a chance to heal…that is if you want your knee to return back to normal.
Immediately after a knee injury follow the RICE principle:
- Rest
- Ice- Use an ice pack for 20 minutes every 2 hours.
- Compression- Apply pressure over the area.
- Elevate- Elevate your leg.
Other options:
- Cold laser therapy can help accelerate the healing process of injured tissue. By using specific wavelengths of light to ‘jumpstart’ the healing process damaged tissue can repair itself, swelling and knee pain can be eliminated; therefore, function can be restored. There are no side effects to getting cold laser treatments. The treatments are performed by a qualified cold laser doctor.
- A Cortisone Injection may help reduce swelling, inflammation and reduce pain. Cortisone is helpful if you have acute knee pain and want immediate relief. However, cortisone doesn’t FIX the damaged tissue it just puts a ‘band aid’ on the problem. Since cortisone is a steroid there is a limit of three injections each year. Injections are performed by your doctor.
- Over the counter or prescription pain medication to temporarily help relieve knee pain and swelling. However, this is only a short term solution to help relieve knee pain.

MRI’s Cannot Predict if Knee Cartilage Can Be Fixed With Knee Surgery
It was once believed that doctors could predict the reparability of a torn meniscus from an MRI. However, according to a new study released in Decembers issue of the American Journal of Sports Medicine this is not the case. In fact, when two senior ‘renowned’ radiologists were given a series of preoperative MRI’s of 119 tears to review and determine which tears would need to be repaired versus being removed only one radiologist was correct 63% of the time and the other only 58% of the time. Both agreed on only 38.1% of the cases. The study concluded that even though MRI’s have a 99% accuracy determining if there is a meniscus tear in the knee joint they cannot predict if the knee cartilage can be fixed with knee surgery.
Bernthal the head researcher in the study stated, “Patients having surgery for a meniscal tear will have to wait until the procedure itself to know just what to expect afterward…My assumption is that somewhere down the line we’ll get to the point of being able to predict (reparability). But we’re just not there yet.”
Based on this research study patients diagnosed with a meniscus tear will have to find out AFTER the surgery whether the surgeon was able to repair the tear or remove the tissue altogether. This is a scary thought for patients trying to weigh their options. Especially, since removing the meniscus tissue will likely create a ‘bone on bone’ situation in the knee. (Unfortunately, once removed, the meniscal tissue doesn’t grow back.)
The unpredictability of arthroscopic knee surgery is yet another reason to try conservative therapies FIRST!! Having a doctor treat your knee, who specializes in Cold laser therapy for knee pain is a good place to start with treatments.

Exercises Prevent Knee Injuries and Reduce Soldier Drop Out Rate in UK
Soldiers are expected to endure a strict exercise regime over the course of their training. In the UK over 25% of British soldiers drop out of the army because of severe knee pain. As a result, a new stretching and exercise routine was studied to discover whether it would lower the risk of knee injuries therefore reduce the dropout rate. The study which was conducted over a 3.5 month period, with 1,500 soldiers found that certain exercises which included stretches and strengthening exercises for the major leg muscles reduced knee injuries by 75%.
Researchers concluded that targeted exercises for the leg muscles have helped reduce the risk of knee injuries; therefore, the dropout rates specifically due to knee pain complaints have drastically decreased.
Since 2001, I have been touting the benefits of stretching and strengthening exercises to help reduce knee injuries; therefore, help reduce the likelihood of knee pain.
Do your knees a favor if you are currently not incorporating stretches in your daily routine then-START DOING THEM! The simplest stretch you can begin doing TODAY is to sit in bed and have your legs stretched out in front of you. Then bend over from the waist as if you’re going to touch your toes. Now most of you with knee pain will not be able to touch your toes. DON’T WORRY ABOUT THAT!! The most important thing is that you feel a pull or stretch down the back of both legs or in your hamstring muscles. Hold this stretch for 10 seconds and repeat it 5 times. If you do this simple stretch every day, without fail you will notice that the knee pain and cramping in your legs will subside.

Bone on Bone Knee Pain Takes a Toll on Young Athletes
Bone on Bone knee pain isn’t only reserved for seniors with years of wear and tear. In fact, most professional athletes will suffer from bone on bone knee pain, or other joint problems early on in their careers.
Recently, Kobe Bryant the thirty two year old star basketball player for the Los Angeles Lakers stopped practicing with his team because of severe knee pain. Bryant is now only playing in actual games in order to prevent further wear and tear on his knee joint. He announced to Peter Vecsey from The New York Post “… I have very little cartilage under my right knee cap, it’s almost bone on bone.” Kobe Bryant not only wore down the cartilage in his knee because of years of wear and tear from playing basketball, but he had three prior knee surgeries which have also contributed to the cartilage loss and arthritis in his knee joint.
In addition, Portland’s Brandon Roy who plays basketball for the Trail Blazers has had to stop playing altogether because he was experiencing severe knee pain on the court. He just announced that he was going to get another arthroscopic knee surgery even though doctors told him that he no longer had meniscus/cartilage in his knee, and that he was bone on bone. Obviously, Roy is desperate to keep playing because arthroscopic knee surgery is never recommended for bone on bone because the surgery actually exacerbates the problem.
Both Bryant and Roy probably need total knee replacements but that would be unrealistic since it would force them into retirement. If these athletes want to keep playing they should consider getting a trained health care professional to use Cold Laser Therapy on their knee for pain management. If performed correctly cold laser therapy might make a huge difference in allowing both basketball players to practice and play with their team again.

Long Lasting Knee Pain Relief with Cold Laser Therapy for Mansfield, TX Resident
Mrs. Penny B., a Mansfield resident underwent Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program at the DFW Spine & Joint Center for severe knee pain in her right knee. Prior to starting cold laser treatments Mrs. Penny B. tried every knee remedy available including surgery, but none of them provided long term relief…that is until she found Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.
“The pain in my right knee was pretty bad, although I think I had gotten used to the pain and just was living with it. I couldn’t stand for long periods because of the pain. But also the longer I stood on it the less mobile and more stiff it became. I had arthroscopic knee surgery which only helped temporarily. The doctor removed bone spurs and fixed the meniscus tear. After the arthroscopic knee surgery the doctor said it looked very arthritic in the knee and that I would need a replacement sooner or later.
I tried a lot of things before getting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program. They all helped somewhat (things like SYNVISC injections, prednisone, Alleve, Physical therapy and hot laser/ high level laser therapy-which was more like heat and temporary in nature.) Nothing so far has provided me long lasting knee pain relief like the cold laser therapy treatments with Dr. Schnee.
I am very pleased with the pain relief, and the great staff who are courteous and considerate. Dr. Schnee is very knowledgeable and has been helpful to me. I appreciate all the help and information. I would say my knee feels at least 50% better or improved. There is much less pain in the right knee and I walk easier. Standing is also a lot easier.”

Fort Worth Resident Can Now Stand And Walk Without The Assistance Of A Walker with Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Treatments
Prior to completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program, knee pain kept Mrs. P., a Fort Worth resident, from walking any distance without the use of a walker. Her surgeon suggested a total knee replacement after knee injections proved to be unsuccessful. However, Mrs. P’s cardiologist did not approve of her undergoing major surgery so she looked for other options and found Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C. in Irving, Texas. The following is Mrs. P’s story, and how Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program has made a major difference in her life.
“My pain level was a 10 [in my knee]!! I was unable to walk without the assistance of a walker. I then only walked for the necessary activities of daily living. I was unable to sleep at night due to the pain. I could not sit for very long either. Initially, I went to an orthopedic surgeon for an x-ray and examination. He recommended a knee replacement. He also gave me a knee injection which did no good at all. I tried physical therapy which caused more pain.
Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can now stand, and walk without the assistance of a walker [because I have very little knee pain]. Although I still have limitations, I can take care of my daily living needs and attend some social activities. I now sleep soundly without medication, and I can now sit for longer periods of time. I am very pleased with the Cold Laser treatments that I received. I am experiencing approximately 80% mobility over my original condition. I expect this to improve with time as I continue the exercises provided to me by Dr. Schnee.

Fort Worth Resident Experiences Knee Pain Relief with Non-Surgical Cold Laser Therapy
Two months ago, Mrs. D visited Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C. at the DFW Spine & Joint Center complaining of severe knee pain. The pain kept her from doing any activities that involved walking, standing, or climbing stairs. She even complained of pain at night. She was told by an orthopedic surgeon that she would need to get a total knee replacement since she was diagnosed with ‘bone on bone’, osteoarthritis of the knee, and chondromalacia patella. Mrs. D did not want to have knee surgery because she had friends who had it done and they were still complaining that they had knee pain. The following testimonial is Mrs. D’s story and her experience with Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Treatment Knee Program. (She gave us permission to share it.)
“[Before starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program] the pain in my left knee was very severe. There was swelling and a popping noise when I walked. My walking was slow and painful. When my knee pain was at its worst the walking and standing was limited to short periods of time. Sitting and lying down was very uncomfortable to get in the right position. Before cold laser therapy I tried using a heating pad and I took Aleve two and three times a day and I stayed off of my feet as much as possible. I talked with my friends that were having the same problems and they had the replacement and surgery and I didn’t want to go that way so I decided I did not want surgery. [Even though the surgeon recommended that I have knee replacement surgery].
Since completing Dr.Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can sleep at night. I don’t use a pillow anymore [between my knee knees] and I can stand and walk without knee pain. There is very little popping, and the swelling [in my knee] is completely gone.
I am very pleased with cold laser therapy treatments. [This is non-surgical so] There are no scars. My overall percentage [of improvement since starting care] would be 85-95%. I have told all of my friends and I recommend it very highly.”

Cold Laser Knee Program Helps Dallas Resident Walk and Sleep through the Night Pain-Free!
Dallas resident and full-time property manager Mrs. B could hardly walk without the use of a cane when she initially came in to see Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C.
She was diagnosed with a Baker’s Cyst, osteoarthritis of the knee and ‘bone on bone’ by her orthopedic doctor. Since Mrs. B is the sole caretaker for her handicapped husband she chose to delay knee replacement surgery, and instead undergo Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.
The following testimonial was written by Mrs. B after she completed treatments at the DFW Spine & Joint Center.
“At times [the pain in my right knee] was extreme to the point I couldn’t walk. The knee would buckle and the pain was constant. I couldn’t walk, perform my household work, or perform my job [duties]). I tried shots in the knee, [wearing] a knee brace, over the counter medications, and heat on the affected area. The orthopedic surgeon said a knee replacement was quite possible if the Euflexxa shots did not give relief.
Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can do everyday chores and care for my handicapped husband as well as take care of my work obligations-I have no pain in my right knee so I can sleep at night. The knee pain and swelling is significantly reduced and with ice and Biofreeze I am able to do most everything I need to do.”

I couldn’t stand for a long time and I had to use a crutch to keep from falling. I also used to wake up in pain in the middle of the night [from knee pain].
Since starting Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can walk without a crutch, stand for a short while, and sleep thru the night without [experiencing] knee pain. I am pleased with the results. I now hardly have any pain in my knee. [And] I have little popping going on with my knee.”

What’s Good For the Heart is Good for the Cartilage in Your Knees: How Physical Activity Helps Promote Cartilage in Healthy Knees
A total of 297 healthy individuals between the ages of 50-79 who had NO PREVIOUS HISTORY OF KNEE INJURY OR DISEASE were recruited to take part in a research study to find out whether the same vigorous activity that was good for the cardiovascular system was beneficial for the knees. Cartilage volume was measured with an MRI before and after physical activity.
The study concluded that frequency and duration of activity increased the cartilage volume, and that vigorous activity has a beneficial effect on the cartilage in the knee joint in healthy adults.
If you suffer from knee pain or stiffness that eases with activity then you may want to try using a recumbent bike for 20 minutes on a daily basis. This is a great non-weight bearing activity that will get your heart rate up, help keep the weight off, and strengthen the muscles around the knee joint alleviating the stress on the cartilage!
In conclusion, if you don’t have a prior knee injury or knee condition, such as arthritis or a meniscus tear, then vigorous physical activity may actually help prevent you from developing knee pain.
