Dallas, TX- Knee Pain Relief with These Two Super Foods

I was reading the current issue of AARP magazine when I stumbled onto an article that discussed the seven super foods that can help ease pain.  I was really interested in two of the seven foods they were discussing since they had to do with relieving chronic knee pain.  So in this blog I want to give you an overview of the two foods they talked about.(In the past, I’ve written about foods you should avoid or consume if you have chronic knee pain that you check out by clicking onto the link.)

Complaining of Chronic Knee Pain?  Try Taking Ginger Extract

In one of my blogs I specifically wrote about ginger and how it can help relieve knee pain caused from muscle inflammation.  Recently though another study about the benefits of ginger were released by the University of Miami.  The study was conducted with patients who had been diagnosed with chronic knee pain.  This six week study found that almost two-thirds of patients with chronic knee pain experienced less soreness upon standing after taking a ginger extract.  The ginger extract also helped chronic knee pain sufferers walk with less pain after walking 50 feet compared to those taking a placebo.  In addition, those taking the ginger extract reported taking less pain medication.

It is believed that taking as little as two to three teaspoons of ginger extract daily can block a key enzyme that induces inflammation and promotes knee pain.

Soy Also Helps Relieve Knee Pain

A study from Oklahoma State University stated that patient’s were able to reduce their pain medications by fifty percent after consuming 40 grams of soy protein daily for three months.  For good sources of soy protein, increase your intake of soy milk, edamame, or tofu.  The benefits of soy take at least two to three weeks before they kick in so be patient!

Changing Your Diet Will Make A Difference…

The bottom line is that diet plays a major role in how our bodies react.  You can either have a diet filled with inflammatory promoting foods; for example, red meat, sugar, processed foods OR you can consume more anti-inflammatory foods such as soy and ginger.

Find Out Which Two Tropical Fruits Can Help Decrease Inflammation in Your Knee

By turbodev1 · February 10, 2011 · Filed in Health · No Comments »

If you have inflammation in your knee due to an injury or arthritis then consider supplementing with digestive enzymes which have shown to help decrease swelling.

Enzymes such as bromelain, and papain have shown to heal damaged tissue by inhibiting inflammatory chemicals.

Bromelain: This is an enzyme found in pineapple.  It helps decrease joint pain by blocking pro-inflammatory chemicals in the body.

Papain: This enzyme is found in papaya, and has been shown to promote wound healing and allows injuries to heal faster.

These enzymes assist in repairing tissue by decreasing permeability in the capillaries, improving blood flow, and eliminating fibrin clot deposits.

In conclusion, if your knee is inflamed or swollen consider adding pineapple or papaya into your diet, or you can purchase bromelain or papain enzyme supplements from any health food store.

Why Does Cold Laser Therapy Help Relieve ‘Bone on Bone’ Knee Pain?

By Dr Schnee · February 1, 2011 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain, Testimonial · 9 Comments »

In previous blogs, I’ve written about how osteoarthritis affects the knee joint, and how the cartilage in the knee wears down eventually leading to ‘bone on bone’ knee pain.  But let’s review how individuals become ‘bone on bone’…

In a nutshell, osteoarthritis causes the cartilage in the joint to start losing water, over time the cartilage gets soft then it fragments and it cracks.  The cartilage continues to break down eventually exposing the underlying bone. The pain that a person experiences with ‘bone on bone knee pain’ is not directly due to a lack of cartilage instead the pain arises from the synovium or lining of the bone becoming inflamed and irritated.  In addition, to the synovium causing knee pain, the nerve endings on the exposed bone are very sensitive, and when they become irritated and inflamed this also causes knee pain.

How does cold laser therapy help relieve ‘bone on bone’ knee pain?

Cold laser therapy is used on individuals seeking a non-surgical alternative to help improve function, eliminate pain, and swelling with ‘bone on bone’ knee pain. Cold laser treatments or low level laser therapy treatments use specific wavelengths of light which interact with tissue that is damaged/ injured, or irritated.  Ultimately, cold laser therapy reduces/eliminates knee pain in patients who are ‘bone on bone’ in the knee by reducing inflammation and irritation to the synovium and the nerve endings.   In addition, the physiotherapy that is completed along with the cold laser treatments helps strengthen the ligaments and muscles surrounding the knee to help reduce the pressure on the joint.

As a result, patients experiencing severe knee pain from ‘bone on bone’ often complete cold laser treatments, feeling 50-90% improvement compared to when they initially started care.  For instance, Geralyn E., a 65 year old, from Hurst, Texas was diagnosed by her orthopedic surgeon with ‘bone on bone’ knee pain.  He told her that she would need to lose weight before he would even consider doing a total knee replacement on her right knee.  Of course, because of the severity of Geralyns’s condition she found it almost impossible to exercise so she was never able to really lose enough weight to undergo knee surgery.

Until now.

The following is what Geralyn wrote about her condition and the results she has achieved with Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program:

“The pain in my right knee was pure agony! Anything that required me to move my right knee hurt.  I couldn’t walk, and sleeping was also painful.  I tried pain medications and multiple injections in my knee but they didn’t work.

I am now almost finished with my treatments, and I am very pleased [with the results because] I can [now] move and sleep without experiencing any knee pain.”

Since starting care, Geralyn has experienced such a significant improvement in her knee that she no longer is contemplating knee surgery, and she is now able to exercise without complaining of knee pain.

Geralyn’s situation is not unique.  At the DFW Spine & Joint Center, Dr. Alexandra Schnee, D.C. has helped hundreds of individuals with ‘bone on bone’ knee pain avoid knee surgery by eliminating the pain and swelling in their knees.  For most individuals the results from the treatments are sustainable.

If you have ‘bone on bone’ knee pain and want to avoid knee surgery then call the DFW Spine & Joint Center to find out if you’re a candidate for Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program.  Otherwise if you would like more information about Dr. Schnee’s successful knee program fill out the form on the right hand side of the screen and a FREE report will be mailed to you!

Flat Feet May Play a Role in Chronic Knee Pain, Cartilage Loss in Adults

By Dr Schnee · January 25, 2011 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain · No Comments »

A recent study published online in Arthritis Care & Research suggests that older adults with flat feet have a higher incidence of knee pain and cartilage loss on the inside of the knee joint then those with higher arches.

The study conducted on 1,900 adults over the age of 50 found that participants with the flattest feet were 31% more likely to complain of knee pain then the participants with normal arches.  Moreover, the participants with flat feet were 43% more likely to suffer with osteoarthritis on the inside of the knee (cartilage loss).

Osteoarthritis in the knee is typically caused from years of excessive pressure on the knee joint.  Knee osteoarthritis usually deteriorates the cartilage on one side of the knee joint, most commonly, the inside of the joint- the area where the knees touch.

In the case of flat feet or overly pronated feet the individuals posture is thrown off which creates an imbalance in the individuals movement and gait.  As a result this uneven pressure wears down the cartilage on inside of the knee joint.

Individuals with flat feet may want to consider wearing orthotics or arch supports in their shoes as an option to help relieve pressure on the knee joint.

The Top 4 Things Seniors Can Do To Improve Joint Health

By Dr Schnee · January 11, 2011 · Filed in Cold Laser Therapy, Health · No Comments »

Choose the right exercises and stretch daily: Don’t choose exercises that put your joints at high risk for injury.   Exercises that include constant pounding, start-stopping motions, shuffling, and twisting will eventually wear down the joints and possibly cause injury.  Instead choose exercises that are low-impact on the joints such as cycling, walking and swimming.  In addition to daily exercise you should stretch every day.  Improving your flexibility will help you avoid injuries to the joints.

Don’t allow your weight to become a BIG issue: An average person takes 2,000-5,000 steps daily.  Every 5 pound gain increases the force on your knees by 100,000 pounds per day.  Over the years your knees will wear down faster if you weigh more.  In addition, the extra weight will put more strain on your lower back and on the discs in your spine.

Vitamins and Supplements: Taking vitamins and supplements on a daily basis is a simple thing you can do to help support and maintain joint health.  Consider taking a high quality supplement that has glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM in it.   Include Vitamin D3 and Omega-3 fish oil supplements as these have also shown to help lubricate, support and protect the cartilage in your joints.

Get regular chiropractic care: Chiropractors are specialists in spine and joint problems so visiting your chiropractor regularly keeps your spine moving properly.  If you don’t have a chiropractor, select one who is trained in multiple techniques.  For instance, the Activator technique is a gentle type of chiropractic treatment that is a good option for seniors.  With this technique there is none of the usual ‘popping’ or ‘cracking’ that one might associate with a chiropractic treatment. Chiropractors can also utilize non-invasive spinal decompression, cold laser therapy and other forms of physiotherapy to help patients who suffer with more severe arthritis, disc problems, or pinched nerves.

Top 7 Foods that Are Guaranteed to Make Your Knee Pain Worse

By Dr Schnee · September 29, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain · 1 Comment »

The following lists of foods create an inflammatory reaction in the body.  If your diet primarily consists of them then you are guaranteed to make more your knee pain worse.

  1. Sugar: A high intake of sugar is linked to an increase inflammatory response in the body, obesity and Type II Diabetes.
Did you know? Drinking one can of soda is equal to consuming 10-16 cubes of sugar a day.
  2. Starches:Avoid white flour, white bread, white rice, noodles, and pasta.   Most of these products are refined and are stripped of fiber and Vitamin B.
Did you know? If you’re on a diet starches should be avoided because most of them are filled with empty calories.
  3. Cooking Oils: Vegetable oils have high amounts of omega 6 content and low omega 3 content.  A diet consistently high in omega 6 and low in omega 3 promotes inflammation in the body. Over time this imbalance may promote heart disease and cancer.  Replace vegetable oil with organic cold pressed extra virgin olive oil.
Did you know? Most restaurants use vegetable oil to cook their food.
  4. Trans Fats:Trans fats can be found in fast foods, deep fried foods, commercially baked goods, and products cooked in partially hydrogenated oil, margarine, or vegetable shortening.
Did you know? Manufacturers can advertise that their product has zero trans fat even if it has 0.5 g of this toxic fat.  Inorganic peanut butter is a good example of this.
  5. Dairy Products:Milk, yogurt, cheese are products that are common allergens.
Did you know? Sixty percent of the world’s population is unable to digest milk.
  6. Red Meat:Red meat has a high amount of arachadonic acid (omega 6) which increases inflammation in the body.
Did you know? Grass fed beef contains higher amounts of omega-3’s and has less saturated fat.
  7. Artificial Food Additives:MSG, Aspartame, and other preservatives can trigger an inflammatory response in the body.  Avoid drinking diet sodas, eating Chinese food, and eating frozen dinners.
Did you know? Aspartame (the sweetener in Diet sodas) has been linked to Multiple Sclerosis.

The foods listed above are just some of the foods that cause chronic inflammation in the body.  Chronic inflammation doesn’t just exacerbate knee pain it also sets the stage for more serious diseases such as coronary heart disease and cancer.

Choosing the right foods will make a difference in your knee pain and more importantly your overall health.

High Heels May Result in Osteoarthritis Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · September 28, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

Kinesiology researchers from Iowa State University found that wearing high heels can contribute to joint degeneration and osteoarthritis of the knee.  Danielle Barkema a graduate student and Phil Martin a kinesiology professor tested three heel heights on 15 women.  They used flat shoes, 2 inch heels and 3.5 inch heels and conducted walking trials with each of the 15 women.  They used accelerometers and lab equipment to measure the forces acting on the knee joint when walking in heels.  The researchers found that increased heel height resulted in slower speeds and shorter stride lengths when walking.  In addition as the heels got higher the more strain was placed on the inner aspect of the joint; which over time could lead to degeneration of the cartilage and osteoarthritis of the knee.

The research suggests that wearing high heels increases the risk for the development of osteoarthritis of the knee.

However, researchers caution that more studies need to be conducted on a larger sample of women to definitively state whether wearing high heels leads to osteoarthritis of the knees.

In my experience, men (wearing cowboy boots) and women who already suffer from osteoarthritis of the knee have difficulty wearing heels because of the stress it places on the inner aspect of the knee joint.  In addition, patients with knee pain from meniscus tears will find that high heels exacerbate the pain. Typically, once they complete my Cold Laser Knee Program they are able to wear heels again without experiencing knee pain (even though I never recommend that a patient wears heels).

Muscle Pain Causing Your Knee Pain? Try Eating Ginger

By Dr Schnee · September 25, 2010 · Filed in Exercise, Health, Knee Pain · No Comments »

If you’ve never eaten raw ginger you may want to start.  A new study reported in The Journal of Pain, published by the American Pain Society states that taking daily doses of heat-treated or raw ginger helps relieve muscle pain by nearly 25%.  Past research has shown that ginger may have anti-inflammatory and pain relieving or analgesic properties similar to NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories).  So researchers from the University of Georgia and Georgia College and State University examined the effectiveness of ginger on 74 volunteers.  These volunteers were divided into three groups and were either given raw ginger, heated ginger, or placebo.  The volunteers were given ginger for 11 consecutive days after they completed 18 eccentric muscle exercises that induced muscle pain.

The results of the study indicated that the raw ginger lowered the muscle pain intensity by 25% and the heat treated ginger lowered it by 23%. The report did not indicate the amount of ginger given to the volunteers during this study.

If you are suffering from knee pain and you want to avoid knee surgery then Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program may be able to help you.  Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program combines cold laser therapy and physiotherapy to help eliminate knee pain and strengthen the muscles supporting the knee joint.

National Institutes of Health: Proper Knee Alignment May Prevent Arthritis Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · September 3, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

The National Institutes of Health recently conducted a research study on knee alignment and how it affects the knee joint.  A research team followed 2,713 volunteers from Birmingham and Iowa City.  The volunteers were between the ages of 50-79.  All of them either had arthritis in their knees or they were considered at high risk for developing arthritis because they were either overweight, had a previous knee injury, or had undergone previous knee surgery.

First, X-rays were taken and knee alignment was measured.   The alignment was measured and the angle was noted at the point the femur (upper leg) and tibia (lower leg) intersected at the knee joint.  Anything more or less than a 2 degree difference from the normal 180 degree was noted.  X-rays and measurements were taken again 2 years later.

The research team discovered that in volunteers whose knee alignment measured a 2 degree difference (more or less) there was a 1.5 times greater risk for developing arthritis compared to those with a normal (180 degree) alignment.

In a healthy knee 70% of all the force is placed on the medial aspect of the knee (inside). If  the knee joint is out of  alignment the stress on the inside of the knee increases which in turn wears down the inside of the knee at a faster rate.  The NIH research team concluded that if a misaligned knee is corrected early on arthritis could be prevented.

To correct poor alignment of the knee visit a chiropractor, and wear good shoes that provide proper support.  An orthotic may be necessary if you are flat footed or if you have too high of an arch.  In addition, a chiropractor who specializes in the knee joint can give you proper exercises to strengthen and provide support for proper knee alignment.

If you suffer from severe arthritic knee pain and are tired of taking pain medications, getting knee injections, and you don’t want knee surgery; then call Dr. Schnee at 214-596-1051 to find out if you’re a candidate for her Cold Laser Knee Program.

The Top 6 Things You Can Start Doing Today To Help Ease Your Arthritic Knee Pain

By Dr Schnee · August 25, 2010 · Filed in Health, Knee Pain, Osteoarthritis · No Comments »

Please make sure you check with your primary doctor first before taking any supplements or starting an exercise program, but here’s a list of the top 6 things that you can start doing today to help ease your arthritic knee pain:

1. Start taking glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. I recommend Chondrocare from Metagenics to my patients. In my opinion has the highest quality glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM product available. If you’d like to purchase a bottle call my office and we’ll be happy to ship it to you (as long as you live in North America).

2. Take real Cod liver oil. It is a great source of omega 3 and Vitamin D. Research indicates that bone, joint and muscle pain is exacerbated if there are low levels of Vitamin D. Research also indicates that patients who take NON SYNTHETIC, HIGH QUALITY glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin, and MSM ALONG WITH OMEGA 3 notice a significant difference in their arthritic pain. The latest scientific findings show that people who combine glucosamine and omega 3 get up to 80% pain relief, with decreased morning stiffness. Pain in the hips was reduced by over 48% and in the knees by more than 55%. One of the last real cod liver oils made is Blue Ice™ Fermented Cod Liver Oil (2-3 capsules daily). This can be purchased at any good health food store. Please note: most cod liver oil today is stripped from vitamin D and lots of other nutrients. Some are replaced with synthetic vitamin D but that’s not what you want. So make sure it is real, raw and fermented cod liver oil.

3. Drink plenty of water (cartilage is made up of 70% water), and avoid caffeine.

4. Stop eating processed foods and sugars. This is pretty straight forward.

5. Try to keep your diet at least one-third raw whole foods (fruits, vegetables, nuts). Keep in mind red meat has arachidonic acid which causes an inflammatory reaction in the body and often exacerbates arthritic symptoms.

6. Start exercising only once you are no longer in the acute stage otherwise you will probably damage the joint more.

The bones, joints, and connective tissue are living tissue and in a constant state of renewal and restoration. Therefore, simple changes in your lifestyle like taking high quality vitamins, supplements, and changing your diet and activity level can make a real difference in easing your arthritic knee pain.
