Cold Laser Therapy for Arthritis Knee Pain
Cold Laser Therapy for Arthritis Knee Pain
Over the years, there have been numerous studies on the effects of cold laser therapy for arthritis knee pain. Recently Dr. Alexandra K. Schnee, D.C. and Dr. Robert Hanson, D.C. published the results of their clinical findings in an abstract that was submitted, peer-reviewed and accepted by the North American Association for Laser Therapy. The abstract entitled Low-Level Laser Therapy And Its Effects On The Quality of Life for Patients Suffering From Osteoarthritis Knee Pain in the Medial Compartment: A Detailed Analysis By Questionnaire will be presented at NAALT’s annual conference in September.
In summary, Dr. Schnee treated 119 knees, representing 86 patients over a period of 10 months. The only patients who participated in this study were those diagnosed with either moderate to severe arthritis on the medial aspect of the knee (inside part-where the knees touch). Patient’s filled out detailed questionnaires on their final treatment and 79.8% of them reported that their knees were moderately to a great deal better. It was concluded that low-level laser therapy or cold laser therapy for arthritis knee pain helps improve the overall quality of life for patients suffering with chronic knee pain. The following is an excerpt from the abstract.
LOW-LEVEL LASER THERAPY AND ITS EFFECTS ON THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM OSTEOARTHRITIS KNEE PAIN IN THE MEDIAL COMPARTMENT: A DETAILED ANALYSIS BY QUESTIONNAIRE
Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the effects of low-level laser therapy (cold laser therapy) for patients specifically diagnosed with moderate to severe (bone on bone) osteoarthritis knee pain in the medial compartment of the knee by using questionnaires.
Methods: Patients were treated at the DFW Spine & Joint Clinic from June 2010 thru April 2011. There were a total of 119 knees treated representing 86 patients. One hundred nineteen questionnaires were completed and collected after the patients treatment.
Results: There were a total of 86 patients diagnosed and treated for moderate to severe (bone on bone) osteoarthritis in the medial joint compartment with symptoms of knee pain. This diagnosis was a result of either an x-ray or an MRI. Out of those patients 33 had both knees treated and 53 patients had only one knee treated. There were a total of 34 males and a total of 52 females, with a mean age of 66.13 years.
Patients were asked to rate their overall change in activity, limitations, symptoms, emotions, and quality of life after completing 20 treatments using a detailed questionnaire. Patients who had both knees treated were asked to fill out two different questionnaires, one for each knee treated. Overall 79.8% rated the overall improvement of their knee either moderately better to a great deal better. None of the patients rated that the treatments had negative effects on their quality of life or that they experienced more knee pain on the completion of their 20th treatment.
Conclusion: Our results indicate that Low-level laser therapy (or cold laser therapy) significantly improves the overall quality of life and related factors for patients diagnosed with moderate to severe (bone on bone) osteoarthritis knee pain in the medial compartment of the knee making this therapy an ideal treatment for patients with chronic knee pain.

Cold Laser Therapy for Knees | How Cold Laser Therapy Works
Cold Laser Therapy for Knees - How Cold Laser Therapy Works
Cold laser therapy is a painless, non-surgical treatment for knee pain available in hospitals, rehabilitation centers and clinics all over the world. Cold lasers are effective in accelerating the healing process for injured tissue, for pain relief, and for eliminating inflammation.
How Cold Laser Therapy Works…
Healing:
According to the National Academy of Science, the overall effect of cold laser therapy is acceleration in tissue repair… Individuals with knee pain usually have tissues in and around the knee joint that are often irritated and damaged, and research indicates that cold lasers have the greatest healing effect on unhealthy tissue. Cold lasers emit a specific wavelength of light which stimulate, excite and are absorbed by the mitochondria (the brain of the cell). As a result, more ATP (adenosine triphosphate) or usable energy is produced. Since the cell is re-invigorated with more energy, it is finally able to heal and repair itself thereby healing the injured area.
Pain Reduction:
According to Harvard Medical School, cold laser therapy effectively removes the pain signal at the source by rebalancing the sodium potassium pathway in the nerve cell… Knee pain sufferers usually have pain walking, standing, climbing stairs with many suffering from knee pain even at night. Knee pain is due primarily to the nerves in and around the knee joint being irritated. More commonly with arthritis knee pain the lining of the bone or the synovium (which has trillions of little nerve endings) gets irritated and inflamed. When nerves get irritated there is an imbalance of sodium-potassium ions in the nerve cell, which alters the chemical potential of the cell resulting in pain. Cold laser therapy allows a rebalancing of the sodium-potassium pump by increasing the porosity of the cellular membrane.
Inflammation:
According to the periodical, Lasers in Surgery in Medicine, cold laser therapy increases the production of nitric oxide which helps reduce inflammation, improves oxygenation to the area and improves the overall healing ability of the injured tissue…It is not uncommon for patients with knee pain to have inflammation or swelling in the knee. When soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, and tendons) becomes injured, inflammation is common as a result of the body responding to protect the injured area. Pain is a byproduct of inflammation caused by the extra fluid in and around the joint exerting pressure on the sensitive nerve endings. Naturally our bodies produce nitric oxide to reduce swelling in an area, which acts to relax muscles, dilate capillaries, improve blood flow and help protect against further cell injury. Cold laser therapy increases the production of naturally occurring nitric oxide, which reduces inflammation, improves oxygenation to the area and improves the healing ability of the injured tissue.
Having performed over 35,000 cold laser therapy knee pain treatments, Dr. Alexandra K. Schnee, D.C. is considered one of the leading authorities on the topic of cold laser therapy for knee pain. Resident from Dallas, TX No Longer Experiences Knee Pain At Night!
On a scale from 0-10 my knee was an 8 on a pain scale. I could barely walk. I could barely bend my knees to step up or down or off a curb. I could not get on my knees. The pain kept me from sleeping comfortably. I wore an ACE knee brace to get relief and I took Ibuprofen. I also rubbed my knees with Aspercreme. Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program I can walk without the stiffness in my knees. I can bend my knees. I can step up and down on stairs, and I can sleep at night. I am pleased with the results. The cold laser treatments and knee therapy helped reduce the swelling and pain. Sandra M., Dallas, Texas
Dallas Texas Resident No Longer Has Burning Knee Pain!
My knee pain was severe and constant. Walking for extended periods of time, sleeping at night, sitting for any length of time and getting out of a tub would all cause knee pain. I had physical therapy and I did home exercises for my knee which did not give me any relief. I also had gone to a chiropractor and had adjustments. I was told by four different orthopedic doctors to have knee surgery. Since completing Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Program the burning has subsided (stopped) and I am sleeping without pain. I am not limping as much anymore, and I can even stand for a longer period of time. Even a casual acquaintance told me I seemed to be walking better. Nina C. Dallas, Texas

Dallas Cold Laser | Alternative Knee Treatment Program | Dr. Schnee’s Cold Laser Knee Therapy
Chronic knee pain sufferers are usually given one of five treatment options when they visit an orthopedic knee surgeon. They are typically prescribed pain medicine, a cortisone injection, or hyaluronic acid injections (Synvisc, Orthovisc, Euflexxa, Hyalgen). When those three options don’t work- then knee surgery is usually recommended. If a patient does not want to undergo knee surgery then the surgeon will usually tell them to call their office whenever they get tired of dealing with the pain. Unfortunately, it is very rare that an orthopedic knee surgeon will recommend alternative knee treatments, such as cold laser therapy. Interestingly, it is not because they don’t ‘believe’ in cold laser therapy treatments. It’s just that cold laser knee therapy is not a treatment they use in THEIR office, so (often their thought process is) what’s the point of taking the chance of losing the patient by refering them to another doctor?
It should be mandatory that Orthopedic surgeons review ALL treatment options with patients. Including, those that don’t benefit them financially). Recommending alternative knee treatments such as cold laser therapy (which has been around for decades and has thousands of studies to prove its effectiveness for treating pain and inflammation) should not be optional. As a doctor it is our obligation to review all treatment options with patients and then let them decide which treatment is best for them.

Harvard Medical School, NASA, The US Navy – Scientific Breakthroughs Using Cold Laser Therapy
Since the invention of low-level laser therapy (LLLT or cold laser therapy) over forty years ago it has been mostly known for its use in reducing pain, inflammation and edema, promoting healing of wounds, healing deeper tissue and nerve problems, and preventing tissue damage. For years, where conventional medicine (drugs, injections, surgery) has failed in treating many chronic, degenerative and painful musculoskeletal conditions, cold laser therapy has proven to be more effective.
However, recently all of that has changed.
Cold laser therapy is no longer just being used for musculoskeletal conditions.
Scientists are currently investigating cold laser therapy’s use for treating spinal cord injuries, stroke, and both Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
Cold laser therapy is also being trialed by NASA for manned missions into space and has already been used in Antarctica and on US Navy submarines. (Cold lasers are used because in these extreme environments people do not heal very well after injuries)
In addition, at BiOS 2009 (part of SPIE Photonics West) researchers were invited from Harvard Medical School, the US Navy and NASA along with a dozen others to present the clinical benefits of cold laser therapy and its effects on stroke recovery, restoring eyesight after laser injury, healing age-related macular degeneration, improving heart muscle after myocardial infarction, spinal cord injuries, and sperm motility. The full benefits of cold laser therapy for treatment are just beginning to be realized.
Recent findings have changed everything we know about cold laser therapy. It is no longer used just for musculoskeletal conditions…it is anticipated that LLLT technology could be used in almost every hospital department throughout the world. [1]

Injured Muscles Heal Faster With Cold Laser Therapy
Scientists in Brazil evaluated the effects of cold laser therapy on traumatic muscle injuries in rats. The injury was done by single-blunt injury to the gastrocnemius muscle (calf muscle). Scientists separated the rats into three groups. Group I was the control group (uninjured and untreated). Group II was injured but did not receive cold laser treatments. Group III was injured and received cold laser treatments. The results showed that after 5 days of cold laser treatments on Group III the activities of complex II and succinate dehydrogenase increased when compared to the control group. Moreover, the results indicated that cold laser treatments on the injured rats significantly increased the activities of complexes I, II, III, IV and succinate dehydrogenase, when compared to the group of injured rats that did not receive treatments.
The research showed that cold laser therapy increases mitochondrial ATP synthesis which in turn accelerates the muscle healing process.

Reduce Inflammation and Increase Joint Mobility with Cold Laser Therapy!
A recent study was conducted to determine the effects of low-level lasers (cold laser therapy) on inflammation and reduced joint mobility due to knee arthritis. In the study, rats were injected in the knee joint with Zymosan, a solution that induces arthritis and creates an inflammatory response. The knee joint was then treated with low-level laser therapy (cold laser therapy) for one hour immediately after the injection was administered.
The results indicate that cold lasers significantly inhibit edema formation (or swelling) by 24% and increase knee joint mobility by 59%.
